GIVE GIFTS FROM THE (HE)ART FROM
THE GROSSE POINTE ART CENTER

This holiday season, the Grosse Pointe Artists Association will give holiday shoppers more than one reason to give gifts. The GPAA opens its Holiday Show and Boutique at the Grosse Pointe Art Center on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The show and boutique features a mix of fine art and hand-made crafts created by members, which includes painting, sculpture, photography, decorated hand-bound books, jewelry, scarves, glassware, ceramics, fabric art, published works and greeting cards. All items featured in the Holiday Show and Boutique are for sale on a take-with basis.

In addition, all artists are invited to bring materials they no longer use but others may enjoy. Such items will be resold at extremely reasonable prices. “This is a great opportunity for the community to purchase holiday gifts and pick up reasonably priced art materials for their or their children’s experimentation,” said Susan Macdonald, Art Center director.

During the course of the show, the GPAA will collect holiday gifts for children and adults that will be donated to Crossroads in Detroit, which runs a food pantry and community closet. Crossroads is in need of new underwear, hats, gloves, and socks; toiletry items; like-new and clean coats and jackets; and non-battery and non-electrical toys.
The Holiday Show and Boutique is open during Art Center hours noon-5 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and noon-7 p.m. on Thursdays through Dec. 23. The GPAA Art Center is located at 1005 Maryland, at the corner of Jefferson, in Grosse Pointe Park. For more information, call (313) 821-1848, e-mail gpaa1@sbcglobal.net, or visit www.myspace.com/grossepointeartcenter.

SATURDAY SCREENING - Darkness Swallowed
Film By Betzy Bromberg

(2005) (16mm, color/sound, 78 min.)

A personal investigation of cellular memory, a bio-metaphysical musical.

"Los Angeles-based experimental filmmaker Betzy Bromberg returns to the screen this week with her latest gem, a Darkness Swallowed, a 78-minute meditation on the evanescent traces of memory and loss. At once her most elliptical and also her most overt work in a career that spans nearly 30 years and more than a dozen dazzling films, a Darkness Swallowed opens on a pair of faded photographs showing an old dented car, one with a child standing beside it and the other without. Speaking in voice-over, Bromberg references a past event, one that will forever haunt her although it occurred before her birth. The film then sinks downward, dipping below the surface of the rational world to mine the seemingly infinite layers of the past stored within the fleshy entrails, chalky bones, sinewy spider webs and gnarled ligaments of both the body and the Earth. Noises – of clanging metal, bells, heartbeats and jazz music, to name only a few – combine to create a dense sound environment, a seemingly immense, three-dimensional space for contemplation. As with all of Bromberg's films, there are images that, once seen, will stay with you forever, and then there are the colors – rich, luscious hues to be savored slowly. Dedicated to the filmmaker's mother, the film is also a gift to us, a reminder of cinema's organic basis in chemistry and light,
and of its ability to take us deep inside."
-Holly Willis, LA Weekly
