Thursday, June 28th-Sunday, July 1st: DFT Film Festival presents Angel-A
(France/2006) directed by Luc Besson
Incompetent Parisian schemer and petty hood André (Jamel Debbouze) is at the end of his rope–irreversibly in debt to a local gangster, with no one to turn to, his only solution is to drown himself in the Seine. But when he finally jumps it’s to save Angela (Rie Rasmussen), a beautiful and mysterious stranger who’s taken the plunge ahead of him. As this unlikely duo form a bond, André begins to discover that not all debts are financial—and that sometimes hope is found in the unlikeliest of places. The new film from France’s Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Fifth Element, The Professional) is one of his most stylish and sweetly surprising: a love letter to both Paris and to the Hollywood traditions that inspired him. Saturday, June 30th: DFT Saturday Creature Double Feature Matinee featuring Earth vs. The Flying Saucers & Mothra
(USA—1956—directed by Fred F. Sears)
Legendary saucer effects by visual wizard Ray Harryhausen spice up this fast-moving tale of a fleet of desperate, soon-to-be-homeless aliens out to conquer the Earth and take up residence. Fortunately for our side, Earth is well represented by Dr. Russsel A. Marvin (sci-fi veteran Hugh Marlowe), a brilliant scientist who, together with his brand-new, beautiful scientist bride (Joan Taylor), is in no mood to give up his home planet without a fight. One of the most enjoyable sci-fi epics of its day was the blueprint for the countless invasion movies that followed, from Independence Day to Mars Attacks! (which quite intentionally “borrowed” this movie’s saucer design). PLUS: the original Japanese classic Mothra (1961, directed by Ishiro Honda), the story of a gigantic, havoc-wreaking moth, and the foot-tall twin fairies (sisters Yumi and Emi Ito) who control him telepathically while singing. Saturday, June 30th: Cold Hearts Revisited: Short Films and Music Videos from Iceland
If Bjork is in any way representative of what comes out of Iceland, then this should be an interesting event. This is a follow-up to 2006’s successful “Cold Hearts,” with a fresh batch of new short films and music videos from this odd but vibrant island nation. Including irreverent faux pop songs, edible instruments, escapist fantasies and unorthodox quests, the selections for this year’s “Cold Hearts Revisited” are rarely-seen, and encapsulate all that is enchanting and inventive (in a swan-dress-wearing kind of way) about this often-overlooked haven for creativity.

Thursday, June 21st: Public Discussion Regarding Tiger Stadium Demolition
The Detroit City Planning Commission will hold a public discussion session June 21 to consider the proposal to demolish Tiger Stadium.
The public will have the opportunity during the session at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in Detroit to present their views on the plan to tear down the stadium and sell most of its memorabilia online, a plan that was approved this month by the Detroit Economic Development Corp.
If approved by the Detroit City Council, the site will be redeveloped into a mixed-use retail and residential property. Some portions of the ball field will be preserved for recreational use.
The project would be completed in two phases over a two-year period and the estimated cost is $2.95 million. The methods of financing the project include loans from the state Department of Environmental Quality, grants from the Clean Michigan Initiative, and proceeds from the sale of stadium memorabilia.
After the discussion, the Planning Commission will submit a recommendation to the Council. The EDC plans to present the plan to the Council in July.

Thursday, June 21st-Sunday, June 24th: The Detroit Film Theater presents Air Guitar Nation
The DFT's summer film and music festival continues with Air Guitar Nation, directed by Alexandra Lipsitz, 2006 (USA).
Every August, the Air Guitar World Championships bring thousands of fans all the way to Oulu, Finland to see the world's best air guitarists battle it out for 60 seconds of mock stardom. For years, the USA was missing in action. Enter the first official US Air

Full of triumph and disappointment, patriotic spirit and political tension - and of course invisible guitars – this tension-filled competition (each performance is just one minute in duration) quickly turns very real as the contest becomes even more fierce with contestants working hard to win the title of World Air Guitar Champion! Friday, June 22nd: Jobbie Nooner
Who needs Mardi Gras? We here in the Great Lakes State have our OWN tradition of boozin' and floozin', and it's known as Jobbie Nooner. Expect much of the same as you would in NOLA during the celebration of Catholic decadence--lots of public intoxication (only here it's on BOATS, an added obstacle for the drunks to overcome to continue with their drinking), lots of drunk girls flashing their ta-ta's and probably making out, lots of drunk people have sex in the great wide open...I guess what I'm saying is, this isn't really
an ideal family vacation destination spot!
This year, as every year, it is "rumored" to be the second to last Friday in June (this rumor is always true), and it is "rumored" to be cancelled (this rumor is never true). So if you have a boat and a complete lack of moral inhibition, load up on the tequilla and
Miller Lite and find your way to Gull Island for the biggest, debauchery-est party in the Great Lakes!

Saturday, June 23rd: DFT Double Creature Feature Matinee featuring Jason and the Argonauts & Battle in Outer Space
(USA-1963-directed by Don Chaffey)
One of the best-loved of all of the fantasy films of effects genius Ray Harryhausen was this muscular and visually jaw-dropping (for its day) mythological epic about Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece. Some of the most memorable of all of Ray's creations appear here, including the huge metallic giant Talos, an attack by winged harpies, a vicious, seven headed hydra, and, perhaps most astonishing of all, a fight involving multiple spear-and-sword-carrying skeletons, many of whom appear together, fighting vigorously, within the same shots. Such a feat would be a snap in today's world of CGI effects, but RH's artistry lay in moving each figure one frame at a time, a laborious process that nevertheless resulted in a unique, handcrafted movie magic that has remained in the mind of every kid of the era who encountered it. PLUS: Battle in Outer Space (Japan, 1959, directed by Ishiro Honda) a non-stop intergalactic slugfest in which evil aliens in laser-equipped flying saucers find themselves in an all-out fight for survival when the nations of the Earth unite! Saturday, June 23rd: Revolution '67, presented by the Progressive Film Festival
"Revolution '67" by Marylou Tibaldo-Bongiorno is an illuminating account of events too often relegated to footnotes in U.S. history - the black urban rebellions of the 1960s. Focusing on the six-day Newark, N.J., outbreak in mid-July, Revolution '67 reveals how the disturbances began as spontaneous revolts against poverty and police brutality and ended as fateful milestones in America's struggles over race and economic justice. Voices from across the spectrum - activists Tom Hayden and Amiri Baraka, journalist Bob
Herbert, Mayor Sharpe James, and other officials, National Guardsmen, and Newark citizens – recall lessons as hard-earned then as they have been easy to neglect since.

Monday, June 25th: Cinema Canada FREE showing featuring The Rocket
(2005/Canada) directed by Charles Biname
For francophone Quebecers, Maurice "Rocket" Richard holds a singular place in Canadian history. He overcame the National Hockey League's disdain for working-class Québécois players to become a hockey phenomenon, and made the Montreal Canadiens virtually unbeatable in the 1950s. Richard came to symbolize something more than just hockey excellence when, after decking a referee, he was banned from playing in the 1955 Stanley Cup playoffs. The verdict was seen by Québécois as a slap in the face from English Canada, and led to a night of rioting that proved a turning point in Quebec's Quiet Revolution. Charles Biname's superb film biography The Rocket swept the 2006
Canadian Genie Awards, and is being presented by the Consul General of Canada in Detroit free to DFT audiences as part of the 2007 Cinema Canada program. (124 min.)

Double your family’s fun this summer at the DFT’s weekly celebration of the golden age of monster matinees! Each Saturday at 2:00 we’ll present one of the classic fantasy films of special-effects pioneer and Academy Award® winner Ray Harryhausen. They’ll all be shown on the big screen in restored 35mm prints, just the way they originally thrilled a generation that included youngsters like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, who described them as “amazing breakthrough pictures... everything Ray Harryhausen did influenced me.” Long before the age of computer-generated images, Harryhausen’s wondrous creatures were brought to life through the painstaking process of “stop-motion” dimensional animation, in which creatures were posed and photographed one frame at a time until the desired “performance’ was achieved. And what performances they are! Discover new ones every week, and then stick around for a bonus second feature – featuring classic monsters and aliens unleashed from the vaults of Japan’s Toho Studios. Experience them all in the DIA’s beautiful 1,100 seat theatre and make it a memorable summer adventure for the entire family!

Mud, Politics and Social (Dis)function for Zeitgeist Poetry Season Closer - Wednesday, June 20.
Three Established Writers Bring Unique Takes on Relationships and Society
Poetry @the Zeitgeist takes its summer break with a visit from Californian (and ex Detroiter) Ted Pearson, Detroiter Pete Markus‚ and Philadelphian Dan Featherston. Think of this reading as chance to „people watch‰ though unlike watching a crowd we will be focused on some very particular relationships and we will go deep. Renowned writers Ted Pearson, Pete Markus and Dan Featherston will close out the Poetry @the Zeitgeist Spring Summer season Wednesday, June 20, 8:00 PM at the Zeitgeist Gallery 2661 Michigan Avenue, west of Tiger Stadium, east of the I-96 Overpass. Poetry @the Zeitgeist is smoke free and admission free. Call (313) 965-9192 for more information or visit www.zeitgeistdetroit.org.
No one chooses words more carefully than Ted Pearson. With lyric grace and surgical precision, his poetry combines deep blues, edged satire, and high jazz wit to examine daily life in a disintegrating body politic. Long associated with the Language School poets, Pearson‚s latest books are Songs Aside (Past Tents Press, 2003) and the forthcoming Encryptions (Singing Horse Press, 2007). He lives in Redlands, California.
.Markus‚ work also involves relationships as well, the relationship of two young brothers that are nameless but hardly generic. Their world is elemental, surreal and sometimes brutal in a strangely vital fashion. Mud, fish, the moon and rivers abound. There is a female/sister demi-goddess but only the shadow of parents. Markus‚ unique vision put forth in his book Singing Fish (Calamari Press) has garnered praise and generated buzz.
Among Featherston‚s books of poetry is a volume called United States where he delves into among other things, politics in the largest sense of that term. He does this ironically by exploring the details of things like Charlie Chaplain‚s iconic film Modern Times. Featherston also directly attacks dehumanizing aspects of human culture.
Poetry @the Zeitgeist is a free, nonsmoking monthly series that features established and upcoming poets of note in the Detroit area and beyond.

Friday, June 22nd Jobbie Nooner
Who needs Mardi Gras? We here in the Great Lakes State have our OWN tradition of boozin' and floozin', and it's known as Jobbie Nooner. Expect much of the same as you would in NOLA during the celebration of Catholic decadence--lots of public intoxication (only here it's on BOATS, an added obstacle for the drunks to overcome to continue with their drinking), lots of drunk girls flashing their ta-ta's and probably making out, lots of drunk people have sex in the great wide open...I guess what I'm saying is, this isn't really an ideal family vacation destination spot!
This year, as every year, it is "rumored" to be the second to last Friday in June (this rumor is always true), and it is "rumored" to be cancelled (this rumor is never true). So if you have a boat and a complete lack of moral inhibition, load up on the tequilla and Miller Lite and find your way to Gull Island for the biggest, debauchery-est party in the Great Lakes!

Imagine: It’s a sunny, Friday summer evening and you’re driving down Woodward Avenue. The light turns red and you stop at the intersection at Kirby when a very tall man wearing black and wielding a giant crop leads his three dinosaurs across Woodward. This man speaks a strange language and the dinosaurs roar and rumble as they curiously observe their surroundings. They cross the street and the light turns green. You just drove past the Detroit Festival of the Arts, and what a festival it was.
The above act, Sau’rus, came from the Close-Act Visual Theatre, which is based in the Netherlands. Men on stilts, who were hidden by veils, wore the dinosaur outfits with long necks and jeweled heads. Although it was obvious to adult spectators that there were people in the suits, some children clung to their moms for dear life. These dinosaurs, all acting with comedic intent, walked through the crowds terrorizing the unsuspecting and unaware.
There were plenty of great shows at the Festival, along with some great art. Just as the University Cultural Center hoped to draw attention to their organization in co-hosting the event (see our preview feature on the Festival), the artists who showed up hoped to spread word about their art. Those who attended the Festival saw some great acts, and for those who didn’t go or didn’t get to see every thing, here’s a quick rundown of a few of the acts in town on just the first Friday evening.
Lelavision, a music and dance group, played several of their ingeniously designed instruments while performing humorous choreography. One instrument was a spinning metal tube with a wide bottom and narrow top. The two performers climbed upon it as it spun and plucked strings attached to it and then one performer fell inside, where he began playing music from within. The most impressive instrument, though, was a giant harp that lay on its side. The performers wore gloves and rubbed their rears and hands against the strings in order to create music. They played a jig, a game of catch with sound, and some tug of war. Apparently, they have several more neat instruments, including some that are much too large to lug around. A few international bands had a chance to play some music and sell their CDs. This included the Screaming Orphans, an Irish pop/rock band consisting of four Irish girls, who played guitar, bass guitar, drums, and accordion for their own stuff, and then pulled out a violin and an Irish drum to play traditional Irish music. Another band was a Cambodian pop/rock band called Dengue Fever. The only Cambodian in the group, admittedly, was the singer Chhom Nimol, a pop star in Cambodia who is relatively unknown in the U.S. Nimol sang in her native language as the band played both their own music and covers of other Cambodian bands. There were plenty of other bands at the Festival during the whole weekend, with a mix of music from around the world.
Another big draw was Osadia, a pair of hair sculptors from Spain who pulled people from the audience and created intricate designs in their hair. They painted the hair and shaped it into whatever design they saw in their heads, just like a sculptor looking at a block of marble and seeing their work of art within it. Some patrons walked away with stuffed toys in their hair, but everyone walked away with a smile on their face. Osadia’s final hair sculpture was done on a bald man, who very happily walked away with a Mohawk made of koosh balls. To see more information on this pair, visit osadiaonline.com.

IMAGES from Detroit’s Cass Corridor
Thursday, June 7, 2007 at 9pm at the Motor City Brewing Works.
Images from Detroit’s Cass Corridor, a film by Kathryn Brackett-Luchs and Shaun Bangert is an amazing documentary featuring some of the artists working in the Cass Corridor within the city of Detroit, primarily
during the 1960 - 1970s. Interviews with artists who stayed in the city and those who left to pursue their art careers elsewhere, reflect on the art community — their work, influences, and creative processes during this specific period. This “must see” film is available through Doorjamb Press.

Friday, June 9th-Saturday, June 10th: The Detroit Film Theater presents The Adventures of Prince Achmed
(Germany/1926) directed by Lotte Reiniger
Predating Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by 11 years-and thereby arguably the first animated feature film-Lotte Reiniger’s enchanting fantasy was created with intricately crafted silhouette figures that perform their timeless story against phantasmagoric, color tinted backgrounds. This unique cinematic shadow play was the product of three years of planning, design and filming by the woman described by Jean Renoir as "born with magic hands." This rare screening of a restored 35mm print of The Adventures of Prince Achmed will be accompanied on pipe organ by Mr. Steve Schlesing. Mr. Schlesing will play themes from composers of the early 1920's and blend them with his own to create a unique score, the first performance on the DIA's 1927 Casavant Symphonic Pipe Organ in more than a decade! 72 min. ADMISSION IS FREE!
Where: The Detroit Film Theater (inside the newly remodeled auditorium in the DIA)
When: Friday: 4:00PM, 7:00PM; Saturday: 4:00PM, 7:00PM

This family friendly event will bring together artists from around the corner to the other side of the world, from Detroit’s own poet Kawita Kandpal to a band from the Sierra Leone refugee camp, called Sierra Leone, to the Mexican American violinist, born in Oaxaca, Lila Downs. Artist booths will line Cass Avenue, where over 100 artists will put their work up for sale. Wayne State University’s campus will hold the Youth Artists Market, where there will be over 50 interactive activities for children, as well as puppet and pirate shows. Festival Special Events Director of UCCA Maureen Riley promises, “We guarantee you will come and find something you have fallen in love with.”
In providing a place for artists from around the world to perform so audiences can enjoy new flavors of art, the organizers of the festival first and foremost seek to promote Detroit, as well as attract new people to the University Cultural Center. This art-filled weekend in Detroit will be, Riley says, a magical environment where people of all ages, socio-economic statuses, and races will come together in a diverse group. She adds, “Nobody but the Festival brings this kind of stuff.”

The Detroit Festival of Arts began in 1987, when Wayne State University’s “Welcome Back Festival” merged with the UCCA’s own festival, “September Song.” More recently the festival was moved to June because the early summer month provided a better time to bring together people outside of the campus population. The move has proved positive, as it has enjoyed more success under the nicer summer weather and less family scheduling conflicts.

Area museums will be involved to help bring the arts community together as well, offering membership discounts during the Festival, and some museums will hold special events, such as the Charles H. Wright Museum showing a documentary about Sierra Leone as a companion to the band’s performance, and the DIA will host a mini-golf course and a 1926 European animated film, The Adventures of Prince Achmed. This Detroit tradition promises a great arts experience and lots of fun for everyone. Come out and support Detroit and arts from around the world.
The Festival is free for all ages. For more information visit the website at http://detroitfestival.com/
