Thursday, July 26th: DFT Summer Film Festival presents Brand Upon the Brain!

And what a way to conclude the successful summer film series!

(Canada—2006—directed by Guy Maddin)

Winnipeg wunderkind Guy Maddin (The Saddest Music in the World) is back with his most spectacularly outrageous and purely enjoyable epic to date. With a hilariously labyrinthine plot that defies description (we can reveal that it contains a crazed mother who wants to restore her youth, a mysterious orphanage, a mad scientist, a Romania-shaped birthmark and an anxiety-ridden hero named Guy) Brand Upon the Brain! is equal parts childhood reminiscence, expressionist horror movie and teen detective serial, all orchestrated by one of the world’s most original and visionary filmmakers. Featuring a remarkable orchestral score and a narration by Isabella Rossellini, Brand Upon the Brain! – one of the year’s most subversively funny films as well as one of the most improbably touching – received a standing ovation before sold-out houses at the Toronto and New York Film Festivals. (95 min.)

Friday, July 27th: Rockin’ on the Riverfront with the Romantics

The GM-sponsored weekly event continues with the Motor City’s own Romantics. GM, along with 94.7 WCSX, presents “Rockin’ on the Riverfront,” an all-star lineup of classic rock headliners performing at the Riverfront Plaza for one of the summer’s hottest ongoing free concert series. The Romantics cut their teeth on the Detroit sound characterized by the MC5, the Stooges, Bob Seger and the Last Heard, the Detroit Wheels, the Rationals, SRC, the Underdogs, and infused it with their own sincerity, irony, spontaneity and, of course, volume. They favored short hair, short songs and popularized red leather suits. Their hit “What I Like About You” found cross-generational popularity, and what we like about them is the fact that they’re still donning those red leather suits.

Saturday, July 28th: DFT Saturday Creature Double Feature Matinee featuring First Men in the Moon & Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah

(England—1964—directed by Nathan Juran)

And you thought Neil Armstrong was first. No way! As this playful, exciting, lushly mounted H.G. Wells science-fiction fantasy would have it, an offbeat inventor (the wonderfully comedic Lionel Jeffries) and some friends found a way – in 1899, no less – to fly from their peaceful British Victorian homes all the way to the moon, where they discover a vast, underground lunar civilization, complete with an insect-like supreme ruler who has severe misgivings about his terrestrial visitors. Ray Harryhausen’s elegant special effects shine in this witty and briskly paced adventure, which is unusually faithful to Wells’ original story. PLUS: Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (Japan, 1991, directed by Kazuki Amori), in which time travelers from the 23rd century return to 1992 Japan to present a way to rid Earth of the mutated Godzilla. Much to everyone’s dismay, the plan instead results in the creation of a new monster, the fearsome three-headed King Ghidorah! (double feature runs 206 min.)

Saturday, July 28th: MoCAD Drive-in Movie Nights on Woodward: The Lost Avant-Garde [MAKE-UP EVENT]

What better way to celebrate the summer than a drive-in movie in the heart of the Motor City! In conjunction with their regular film series focusing on early Avant-Garde films, MoCAD presents Dr. Chicago, a uniquely personal, unconventional and absurdly provocative film trilogy. Each frame is composed like an exquisite still photograph - looks like Antonioni but plays like Woody Allen. Its verve derives from an active collaboration of multiple talents kept in focus by director George Manupelli’s offbeat vision of a strangely sympathetic scumbag in pursuit of his impossible American dream. MoCAD will screen Dr. Chicago (1968), and Cry Dr. Chicago (1971).

Thursday, July 19th-Sunday, July 22nd: DFT Summer Film Festival presents Ten Canoes

(Australia—2006—directed by Rolf de Heer)

Winner of a special Jury Prize at Cannes, Rolf de Heer’s Ten Canoes is a transporting experience – a vivid celebration of the art and tradition of storytelling. In an aboriginal village over a thousand years ago, a young man (Jamie Gulpilil) finds himself courting trouble when he covets one of the wives of his older brother. To teach him the proper way to behave, he is told a cautionary tale from the mythical past – a story within a story – which comes to life before our eyes in this deeply wise, visually magnificent film. The first feature shot primarily in an Australian aboriginal language (with English storytelling by the wonderful David Gulpilil), this magical fusion of the themes of love, betrayal, tradition and family is a moving, often funny and altogether unforgettable experience. In English and Ganalbingu with English subtitles. (90 min.)

Friday, July 20th: Rockin’ on the Riverfront with The Guess Who

The GM-sponsored weekly event continues with The Guess Who (no, really, that’s the name of the band—we’re not trying to be coy). GM, along with 94.7 WCSX, presents “Rockin’ on the Riverfront,” an all-star lineup of classic rock headliners performing at the Riverfront Plaza for one of the summer’s hottest ongoing free concert series. The Guess Who’s first single and album, Shakin’ All Over, was released in a plain white record jacket with only the question “Guess Who?” written on it. The marketing ploy capitalized on curiosity and the promise of another British Invasion band. Experimenting with the sounds of freedom, psychedelic and garage rock, it was “American Woman” in 1970 that gave The Guess Who a #1 single in the U.S., unseating The Beatles for three weeks straight. Saturday, July 21st: DFT Saturday Creature Double Feature Matinee featuring 7th Voyage of Sinbad and Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster

(USA—1958—directed by Nathan Juran)

Special effects meister Ray Harryhausen’s first commercial smash was this colorful, lavishly designed and technologically state-of-the-art (for 1958) fantasy about Sinbad the Sailor’s quest to rescue his beloved (and miniaturized) princess from the clutches of an evil sorcerer. Fortunately for kids everywhere, Sinbad had to face and fight a veritable torrent of monsters, all of which were given personality to spare through Harryhausen’s elegant stop-motion artistry. Highlights include the huge, orange, angry Cyclops (which likes to dine on people), Sinbad’s high-energy swordfight with a terrifyingly lithe skeleton (perhaps the most memorable sequence in an adventure film overflowing with them), and of course the rousing musical score by the great Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, Vertigo). PLUS: Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster (1966, directed by Jun Fukuda), in which The Big Guy tangles with gangsters, international terrorists, and a giant lobster named Ebirah. We dare you to pass this up! In Japanese with English subtitles. (double feature runs 171 min.)

Saturday, July 21st: Positively Fourth Street Fair

There’s no website. There’s no planning committee. There’s no evidence this yearly festival even exists except for the quiet blurbs found sporadically in user blogs and (now) that video on YouTube. It’s the yearly event that is almost a myth, but after three decades, it’s still going strong. The very epitome of grassroots, this event is put together year after year by the residents of Fourth Street. All are welcome to join in the quasi-hippie subculture festivities, but to have a booth or be one of the performing bands one must be approached. There is no point person to contact, and you won’t find any information of any value on the Internet that tells you when or where. It just is. All are welcome except the closed-minded, and be sure to get a cup of that dry ice jungle juice!

Saturday, July 21st-Saturday, September 15th: Leah Keller’s “Dancing the Line” Exhibit at the Biegas Gallery

Biegas Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by New York artist Leah Keller. All paintings in this exhibition will have their Detroit debut following an acclaimed exhibition this past spring at the Pump House Regional Arts Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The exhibition features large-scale abstract painting on a variety of supports including mylar, Plexiglass and canvas. Through the work on Plexiglass in particular, Keller pushes the boundary between two and three dimensions by layering transparent supports in front of each other, projecting her thrown forms into space and introducing depth to the visual experience. Viewers are encouraged to walk 360 degrees around each of the layered Plexiglass works to experience the full range of relationships between color and line as they change from every vantage point.

The title of the exhibition refers to Keller’s process, which is literally a dance. As The Detroiter‘s very own Nick Sousanis describes in the exhibition essay, “Leah Keller’s paintings are a preservation of performance – a record of actions and emotions, not representational, but captured – grooves in vinyl, tracks in snow, fingerprints at the scene of a crime. We can’t see the wind, but we can see its effects on smoke, on jet trails brushed across the sky. And so with a graceful curve or the fury of a slasher film splatter, she gives joy, anger, love, solid form.”

Leah Keller was born in 1976 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. After earning degrees in Psychology (B.A., 1998) and English Literature (M.A., 2001), she studied painting under Peter Williams at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Keller currently lives and works in New York City, where she is preparing for a solo exhibition at Galerie Daniel Besseiche in Paris, France.

Friday, July 13th: DFT’s Friday Evening Concert featuring Tom Verlaine

Tom Verlaine, composer, singer, and guitarist for the seminal rock group Television, and guitarist Jimmy Ripp, perform music scored to accompany films from the avant-garde in America and Europe. Verlaine is a critically acclaimed composer and instrumentalist whose main instrument is the electric guitar. He was the guiding force behind Television who, along with such outfits as The Patti Smith Group and The Talking Heads ushered in a new era of independent American music. His recorded output between 1975 and 1992 has consistently earned him critical praise from the music community in the United States and abroad. His 1992 instrumental record Warm and Cool (Rykodisc) won him the New York Music Award for Best Rock Instrumentalist. Jimmy Ripp’s credentials include collaborations with such diverse artists as Mick Jagger, Taj Mahal and Yoko Ono.

The scores have been co-commissioned by The Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio and Tim Lanza of the Douris Corporation through a grant from the Ohio Arts Council. The films include:

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER (1928) Directed and photographed by Dr. James Sibley Watson. Written and designed by Melville Webber. Based on the story by Edgar Allan Poe. Watson and Webber were the first truly avant-garde American filmmakers.

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF 9413 - A HOLLYWOOD EXTRA (1927) Written, produced and directed by Robert Florey and Slavko Vorkapich. Photographed by Slavko Vorkapich and Gregg Toland. Edited and designed by Slavko Vorkapich. Starring Jules Raucort and Georges Voya. One of the first American films to show the influence of German Expressionism and the French avant-garde films of the Twenties, this is a satiric fantasy about a man who wants to become a Hollywood movie star. Reportedly shot for $96, it was made in Vorkapich’s kitchen using cut-out miniatures.

ETOILE DE MER/STAR OF THE SEA (1928) Directed by Man Ray. Starring Kiki. A consciously ’surrealistic’ work inspired by Robert Desnos’ poem, a love affair thematically linked by images of obsessive (sexual) association.

BALLET MECANIQUE (1924) Directed by Fernand Leger. Photography by Dudley Murphy. 10 minutes. Called one of the most influential works in the history of experimental film by the American Film Institute, this is Cubist painter Leger’s only film. Its connection to his two-dimensional work can be seen in the fragmentation and multiplication of images, along with a certain obsession with mechanical objects.

Friday, July 13th: Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone, wsg Judith Berkson

Guitarist Mary Halvorson and violin/violist Jessica Pavone are two of the important, younger improvisers on the NYC scene. Both have incredible technique that they have put to fine use in Anthony Braxton’s ensembles and groups with Taylor Ho Bynum. Mary has been busy doing duos with guitar heroes like Joe Morris and Marc Ribot. Jessica has recently been gigging with William Parker and Eugene Chadbourne, amongst many others. Mary and Jessica’s duo covers wide swaths of sound territory- mostly free improvisation, but with some compositions and even avant-folksongs. They are supporting the release of their latest CD, On and Off. Opener Judith Berkson does a peculiar mix of improv, standards, Schoenberg and sludgy rock performed on electric piano and voice. She has played with folk legend Theodore Bikel, saxophonist Steve Coleman and has performed new music by Milton Babbitt, Joe Maneri and Osvaldo Golijov. Damn girl, take it easy!

Saturday, July 14th: The Detroit Artists Market presents The 2007 Artists & Writers Softball Challenge

I don’t know about you, but when I think about competitive athletic events, the first image that comes to mind is that of a skinny, pasty-white, glasses-wearing, Albert Camus-reading, poetry-reciting writer and his paint-slinging artist friend.

Be that as it may…In celebration of the “Baseball as Art” exhibit currently running at the Detroit Artists Market through July 14th, the Artists & Writers Softball Challenge follows immediately after the closing of the exhibit, and is a pitch-perfect way to send off this celebration of Detroiters’ favorite passtime.

Granted, the exhibit is based on baseball. And this is softball. But will the creative community pitch a fit over this minor detail? Not when it’s all for fun and games! So come support your local creative athletes at an event sure to be full of laughs!

The first pitch will be thrown out by Tigers legend Denny McLain. The “National Anthem” & “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” will be performed by Johnny Evans and
Tino Gross from The Howling Diablos. Hot Dogs and beverages will be available; bleacher seating is limited, so bring a lawn chair if you wish. Also check out the after-game party at Los Galanos in Mexicantown ($10 per person, plus cash bar).

Saturday, July 14th: MoCAD Drive-in Movie Nights on Woodward: The Lost Avant-Garde

Sunday, July 15th: DFT Saturday Creature Double Feature Matinee featuring It Came from Beneath the Sea & Godzilla

(USA—1955—directed by Robert Gordon)

A gigantic octopus is on the loose in San Francisco Bay, thanks to that monster-unleashing staple of fifties sci-fi, atomic testing. The huge beast makes straight for as many landmarks as possible, including The Embarcadero, the Ferry Building, and, of course, the Golden Gate Bridge. Effects master Ray Harryhausen achieved great fluidity of motion in the giant creature despite an incredibly small budget – a budget so low that he was forced to give the big octopus just six tentacles instead of eight! (Viewers can’t tell the difference, however, thanks to that sleight-of-hand miracle known as film editing.) Kenneth Tobey (The Thing) and Faith Domergue (This Island Earth) are the gruff sub commander and the beautiful scientist who team up to save the city from certain destruction. PLUS: Godzilla (Gojira, 1954, directed by Ishiro Honda), the original uncut Japanese masterpiece about the granddaddy of all Japanese monsters, awakened by atomic testing and determined to lay waste to Tokyo. In Japanese with English subtitles. (double feature runs 176 min.)

Thursday, July 5th-Sunday, July 8th: DFT Summer Film Festival presents Triad Election

(Hong Kong—2006—directed by Johnnie To)

Educated racketeer Jimmy (Hong Kong pop star Louis Koo) is in the running for Chairman of HK’s oldest, most fearsome triad (criminal organization) – but he faces stiff resitance from Lok, the current “godfather,” who has served his seven-year term, yet mounts a desperate effort to throw away tradition by continuing as head of the mob, regardless of the amount of violence required. One of the biggest names in Chinese-language cinema, Johnnie To (Breaking News, PTU) has ingeniously reinvented the gangster genre for the 21st century. The director’s virtuosity creates one spectacular action sequence after another, resulting in a nerve-shredding thriller with a darkly political edge; in this dog-eat-dog vision, the body of free-market expansion beats with a savage and ruthless heart. In Cantonese with English subtitles. (92 min.)

Friday, July 6th: DFT’s Friday Evening Concert featuring Jimmy Scott and the Jazz Expressions

The Detroit Film Theater’s Summer of Film and Music Festival series continues with Jimmy Scott. Jimmy Scott is a singer’s singer, and was often singled out by Billie Holiday as her favorite. From his start in 1949 with Lionel Hampton’s R & B infected jazz big band, to his recent recordings of the Great American Songbook on Milestone records, Scott has established a dedicated international audience. His performances are theatrical events, which personify a sense of the tragic with his heartbreakingly fragile, eggshell vibrato and floating style. This is a rare opportunity to hear this American Treasure in recital with the Jazz Expressions, T.K. Blue (tenor sax, flute), Hilliard Greene (bass) and Dwayne “Cook” Boadnax (drums).

[NOTE: The previously scheduled Hiromi concert has been cancelled due to illness]

Saturday, July 7th: DFT Saturday Creature Double Feature Matinee featuring The Mysterious Island & Godzilla vs. Megaguirus

(England—1961—directed by Cy Endfield)

On a dark and stormy night during the Civil War, a handful of Union prisoners escape in a hot-air balloon, and thanks to the powerful winds, they drift toward an island that’s… inhabited by giant monsters! Based on a novel by Jules Verne – and including the return of Captain Nemo (Herbert Lom) from Verne’s previous 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – Mysterious Island is full of wondrous and fantastic creatures designed and animated by effects master Ray Harryhausen. Big chickens, big bees and even a giant crab spring to life, as does Captain Nemo’s mysterious and amazing undersea kingdom – not to mention the smoldering volcano that lies dangerously close. Music by Bernard Herrmann.
