Schmidt are famous for their unique sound source choices. Divorce Italian Style
(Italy/1961- directed by Pietro Germi)
Baron Cefalù (the brilliant Marcello Mastroianni) longs to marry his nubile cousin Angela (Stefania Sandrelli of The Conformist), but one obstacle stands in his way: his fawning wife, Rosalia (Daniela Rocca). His solution? Since divorce is illegal, he hatches a plan to lure Roslaia into the arms of another and then murder her in a justifiable effort to “save his honor.” Pietro Germi’s hilarious satire of Sicilian male-chauvinist culture won the 1962 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, though it was originally conceived as a drama until it became apparent that the absurdity lurking at the story’s core was a bitterly funny comedy in disguise. Detroit Guerrillas at Cuisine
Join the Detroit Guerrillas as they continue their summer of patios, decks, and docks and class it up a bit at Cuisine! Chef Paul studied at La Francais and Le Cordon Bleu culinary institutions in Paris, and Cuisine is a fulfillment of his lifelong dream of owning an award-winning restaurant (in his hometown of Detroit, no less). The food here is fab.u.lous., and the Guerrillas encourage all Guerrilla-goers to make dinner reservations prior to taking over the bar and patio for an evening of fine wine and aged whiskey (oh fine, get a Bud Light if you must). This is a Detroit dining gem that has flown mostly under the radar, but is probably the hands-down best in the city (yes, better than the Whitney and Opus One). Come for the French-fusion food (FYI: “veal shortbreads” are neck glands; foie gras is liver—just thought you should know), stay for the reasonably-priced booze and good old-fashioned Guerrillas fun!

In the Blood
Planet Ant Theatre proudly presents…
IN THE BLOOD, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated drama, by Suzan-Lori Parks, directed by Detroit theatre maven Lavinia Hart, Head of Wayne State University’s Acting MFA program. In The Blood is the story of Hester LaNegrita, a homeless woman who lives under a city bridge with her five children from five different fathers. Illiterate and struggling with the survival of her family, Hester is a devoted mother. Her children return her love without complaint about their circumstances. Like her namesake in The Scarlet Letter, Hester daily confronts people from the outside world who view her plight as unredeemable.
Playwright Suzan-Lori Parks underscores the polarity between Hester’s family and the outsiders by using a double-casting device. Each actor who represents one of her children also plays one of the adults who intrude on their world.
Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2000, the play is an archetypal portrayal of the will to love in a world of self-serving individualism.
Director, Lavinia Hart, Assistant Professor of Theatre and Head of the Acting MFA at Wayne State University, joined the WSU theatre department after teaching, acting and directing for three years in Minnesota. Ms. Hart was the Artistic Director of the Attic Theatre in Detroit for 19 years where she acted, directed and produced more than 100 plays. Her most recent WSU directing credits include The Lusty and Comical History of Tom Jones (Best Local Professional Comedy nominee for the 2008 Wilde Awards), Translations and Antony and Cleopatra for the Hilberry Theatre. She was co-director with Patricia Ansuini for the Hilberry’s production of The Kentucky Cycle which won the Oakland Press Award for Best Direction. Recent Bonstelle Theatre credits include A Christmas Carol and Ten November. Lavinia’s professional credits include direction of Murder on the Nile at The Meadowbrook Theatre and playing the title role in Kim Carney’s world premiere comedy Maggie Rose at the Performance Network. In 2007 she earned a teaching certificate of completion in the foundation courses of the Michael Chekhov Technique from the international Michael Chekhov Association and also remains an active instructor of the techniques of Jacques Lecoq. This summer she was honored to be a member of the faculty of the Actors’ Movement Studio in New York City. Hart is a winner of the Detroit Free Press Lee Hills Award and has been named Michiganian of the Year by the Detroit News Magazine.

World Premiere of New Directions
You are invited to the World Premiere of “New Directions"! The Pilot episode of the series, filmed right here in Metro Detroit. It’s a show based on one basic concept, change.
"New Directions” is the story of a clandestine life makeover program that uses divining methods such as tarot cards to determine where a person’s life needs to go. Good or bad, the New Directions organization effects this change by whatever means necessary, filming these “interventions” and their often disturbing results. The pilot
episode focuses on Nolan Stokes, an average individual whose path in life is altered due to an intervention by those who make up the main elements of the New Directions organization.

Tuesday, July 15th: New American Folk Hero showcase
Tusk Lord, Chris Niels, Duo un Duo
From Joel Peterson at BoHouse:
This tour of folk music innovators was put together by Bohemian pal Mike Tamburo, who had to drop off the bill due to family emergency.
Tusk Lord is only a folk act in the broadest sense: rooted in intuitive playing and mostly electric, he could just as easily fall under the Art Brut category. Very distant sounding percussion and gobs of reverb on everything swirl around tremolo guitar (the technique, not the effect).
Chris Niels’s relation to folk music is more direct; he cites Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson and Robbie Basho as influences and it clearly shows in his guitar playing. Favoring slide guitar and open tunings ala the country-blues greats, he shows reverence for his predecessors, but focuses on his own contributions to the genre.
Good Bohemian buddy Nick Schillace and I will be filling in for Mike Tamburo with our group Duo un Duo. We’ll be exploring the intersection of folk forms and experimental music. Maybe will get miss Jennie Knaggs to sing a couple tunes too!

My Brother is An Only Child
(Italy/2007—directed by Daniele Luchetti)
A smash hit in Italy, My Brother is an Only Child reunites director Luchetti with the screenwriters of his acclaimed The Best of Youth. Set in a small town in the 1960s and 70s, it’s the story of two brothers who want to change the world – one as a prime mover in the local Communist Party, the other as a Fascist. What begins as a simple tale of sibling rivalry becomes an indelible portrait of the social upheavals of those turbulent times, as well as an unexpected love story. An intensely satisfying cinematic work about dreams and disillusionments, My Brother harks back to the exuberance of the early classics by Bellochio and Bertolucci. Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals.
This year’s lineup includes music from De La Soul, the Dead Bodies, Duende!, Thornetta Davis, Doop and the Inside Outlaws, Zoos of Berlin, DJs from Hi-Tek Soul, Great Lakes Myth Society, The Cetan Clawson Revolution, George Clinton with P-Funk, and a whole lot more. Street vendors will be about the same as always (Pure Detroit, etc.). The food has actually changed quite a bit from previous years—organizers didn’t seem to so much go after the high-scale places as before, and the list of food vendors is a lot more yummy-junky than high-end (a notable absence: Coach Insignia; notable additions: La Musique and Happy’s Pizza).
5 days of summer fun await you at CityFest. Go for the food, stay for the music, bring your own booze (just a little tip).

Wine and Jazz Benefit for the United Peace Relief Detroit
Press Release:
“Three of Detroit’s newest visionaries join together in putting hope into
action with a benefit for the newly born nonprofit, UPR Detroit. The event
will take place at TV emerging as the hippest patio lounge in the city in
conjunction with support from the just opened gourmet grocer, Zaccaro’s.
The event will offer a unique selection of cheeses and nosh complimented by
wine hand-selected by local wine distributor, Joe Bruno. The Future Jazz
Kartel will spin out the perfect summer evening sounds featuring the tag
team efforts of DJ Gui LaFleur and Mark Szyamski.
‘This is the perfect way to unwind after work by indulging your senses while
helping to re-direct our unique city. In looking at the recent disasters in
China and Myanma (Burma) we feel sadness for political turmoil that only
exacerbates these tragedies. Yet what did we learn of ourselves during
Katrina? What did we learn of our own hometown after the riots? Grassroots
organizations such as UPR Detroit provides rescue for those the system
doesn’t account for by supplying them with necessities while helping them
to the resources that they need. The demands of our own culture often leaves
us feeling overwhelmed and helpless so here is the PERFECT opportunity to
blow off steam, or relax, and provide great help.
‘UPR Detroit serves the disenfranchised through action, not bureaucracy and
paperwork. The new mobile unit will, however, provide informational
materials to the community it serves as part of their effort to connect
people in need to the resources available. Providing clothing, food,
information, the Relief Bus’ primarily functions as a soup kitchen on
wheels. While developing further abilities, the Bus relies greatly on the
generosity of Zaccaro’s who’s regular food donations have allowed UPR
Detroit to bring quality food to those who are often neglected as the
“undeserving poor". Join us in a great atmosphere while we make a
difference one at a time through food, wine, and compassion.”

My Winnipeg
(Canada/2007-directed by Guy Maddin)
From Canadian wunderkind Guy Maddin (Brand Upon the Brain! The Saddest Music in the World) comes another joyously demented, deeply witty work; this time, it’s a personally narrated fever dream about young Guy’s childhood in the wintry hometown of his memories. Maddin describes My Winnipeg’s disarming blend of documentary and surrealism as “docutasia,” a singular vision that appears to be a long-lost artifact from a movie history that never quite existed. Creature from the Black Lagoon and It Came from Outer Space

In the beloved 3-D Creature from the Black Lagoon, a scientific expedition travels up the Amazon and encounters an astounding amphibian with humanoid features. The stalwart explorers (Richard Carlson, Julie Adams and Richard Denning) are amazed and terrified as they wrestle (literally) with the incredible Gill-Man! (79 min.) Based on a story by Ray Bradbury, It Came from Outer Space stars Richard Carlson as a man who believes he’s witnessed a spaceship’s crash landing – though local residents (mistakenly) dismiss it as a meteor. One by one, their minds are taken over by “it,” and it’s up to Carlson and Barbara Rush to stand up to the one-eyed monster! Both films will be shown in the miracle of “anaglyphic” 3-D. Red and blue glasses will be provided! (81 min.)
