HEIDELBERG PROJECT SUMMER FESTIVAL

“IT’S ALL ABOUT THE D”

On Saturday August 23, 2008, the Heidelberg Project presents It’s All About The D, a free summer festival celebrating what hot, cool, and funky in Detroit. The festival will be held at the Heidelberg Project (3600 Block of Heidelberg & Elba streets between Mt. Elliott & Ellery), from 12-8pm. Detroit is internationally recognized for many great contributions and certainly art and creativity is no exception. This year the Heidelberg Project celebrates hair, fashion, and artistic expressions in many forms. Our featured lineup is as follows:

(3:00 PM) jessica Care moore, internationally-renowned poet, playwright and native Detroiter steps back on the scene as a five time “Showtime at the Apollo” winner. She has been featured on Russell Simmons’s HBO Def Poetry Jam and has shared the stage with some of the nation’s greatest performers including Mos Def, Nas, Sonia Sanchez and Ruby Dee.

(4:00PM) DFW (Detroit Fashion Week) presents “48207’s Rags to International Riches,” a chance for local fashion designers to create cool, one-of-a-kind designs thinking “green” and incorporating found & recycled materials, emulating the origins of The Heidelberg Project.

(5:00 PM) Hump the Grinder’s Hair Wars, the internationally-renowned, Detroit-based show of extravagant hair styles, presents “Hair in the Hood.” The hottest hair designers will be showing off their funkiest creations, proving why the world looks to Detroit for the latest outrageous hair styles.

“Containers in the D,” curated by Detroit artist Alice Smith, will feature mini art galleries showcasing the artwork of a number of local artists in 25’ storage containers. “The idea is to provide local artists an opportunity to showcase their work in a private way so that it does not compete with the Heidelberg environment,” says Heidelberg Project executive director Jenenne Whitfield.

There will also be a children’s station with lots of old school games (sack race, double dutch, barrel of monkeys, hop scotch), crafts, Arts & Scraps Mobile and a hip hop puppet show.

Enjoy food (Avalon Bakery, Heavenly Chicken & Waffles, and Frank’s Creative Catering), music, free massages by Urban Massage Therapy Network and free health screenings by Henry Ford Health System.

The Heidelberg Project is a Detroit community based non-profit organization that empowers people through art. Our mission is to inspire people to appreciate and use artistic expression as a means to enrich and improve our lives, and to beautify and preserve the environment, in which we live, work and play.
