Every year, East Michigan Environmental Action Council (EMEAC) invites Detroit –area youth to impact the environmental world around them through media arts. Detroit is both unique and explosive by way of our environmental challenges and film adaptation. EMEAC offers students the opportunity to showcase their talent along with their love and compassion for the environment through short film, for a chance to win $200 and the opportunity to work on location of a locally produced environmental film.

Students can work independently, as a class, as a school or an organization, producing films no longer than 5 minutes, broadcasting environmental issues or concerns pertinent to Southeast Michigan. Content of films is left to the imagination of the creator, and can include topics ranging from but not limited to, the quality of air, global warming, or a families inability to obtain quality food and water. Students are asked to create films using content that is relevant and impactful to their lives. Deadline for entries is May 15, 2009.

Films will be showcased on the BIG screen at the Main Arts Theatre in Royal Oak Michigan during the month of June. The EMEAC ReMedia Project will be offering a variety of film workshops each month leading to the submission deadline to teach middle and high school students the art and science of creating films. All students interested in participating in the upcoming March workshop, focusing on pre-production and storyboarding, please contact Maizah McCann at maizah@emeac.org and expect additional correspondences pertaining to the content of each workshop.

  1. [...] The East Michigan Environmental Action Council hosts the Youth Environmental Green Screen Film Festival to showcase the work of environmental films produced by Michigan students. The film festival brings awareness and exposure to environmental issues facing Michigan through the eyes of  young people.  Students are encouraged to pick their own topics, which could include food security in Detroit,  air quality, recycling, bio-diversity, wetland conservation and more.  In previous years schools have used their film festival work as leverage to receive grants to purchase video cameras to produce additional environmental films in years to come.  Winners of the Green Screen will win $200 and the opportunity to work on the set of  a  locally produced professional environmental film. You will find information about the 2009 Call for Entries: Youth Environmental Short Film Festival here.
