(France/1965—multiple directors)

Decades before the new multi-part Tokyo! was conceived, a group of six celebrated directors of the French New Wave collaborated with producer Barbet Schroeder (Reversal of Fortune) on this remarkably engaging, rarely-seen compilation of six short tales, each set in a different neighborhood of Paris. As every neighborhood everywhere has a distinctly different character, so too do these stories, which range from hilarious to romantic to chilling, and which share the intelligence and imaginations of their gifted creators. Directors on the project include Claude Chabrol, Jean Douchet, Jean-Daniel Pollet, Eric Rohmer, Jean Rouch, and, in perhaps the most notorious sequence, the great Jean-Luc Godard, whose segment is a radically witty expansion of a brief bit of conversation in one of his earlier films. In French with English subtitles. (95 min.)
