For those of you in the need to know — which includes most of us — here’s some history about the hard-charging, hard-hitting, Detroit Derby Girls. Established in early 2005, the all-female owned and operated flat track roller derby league is over 60 skaters strong. The Detroit Derby Girls are part of the national rebirth of roller derby that began in 2001. Currently, over 40 leagues have formed throughout the US and are joined together by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.

On Saturday, May 30th, the Pistolwhippers and the D-Funk All Stars square off in the DDG 2009 Championship match – at Masonic Temple Drill Hall, 500 Temple St., Detroit.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Kids under 12 get in free when accompanied by an adult.

Limited number of tickets available at the door. The featured charity for the championship match is Alternatives for Girls, a group that helps homeless and high-risk girls and young women avoid violence, teen pregnancy, and exploitation, and helps them to explore and access the support, resources and opportunities necessary to be safe, to grow strong and to make positive choices in their lives.

Entertainment by DJ Clark Eagling the Streamliners and the Motor City Rah-Rahs. National Anthem by Russ Taylor of Satori Circus.

There will be an afterparty immediately following the championship at Small’s, 10339 Conant Ave, Hamtramck.
