Students across southeast Michigan will showcase films with environmental themes during the East Michigan Environmental Action Council’s Third Annual Youth Environmental Short Film Festival, to be held June 4 at the Main Art Theater in Royal Oak.

The young filmmakers’ works express what they think is most crucial to their health and to the natural environment. Some films also focus on making the world (or their school or neighborhood) better.

The first prize short film will receive a $200 cash prize. The winner will go on location with and receive expert advice from local film director and EMEAC Board member Diane Cheklich.

The festival is a celebration of youth voice and emerging environmentalism.  There will be screenings and discussions to educate, explore, inspire and motivate. The short films created entirely by young activists and aspiring young activists, and span environmental and social consciousness.

The films will be judged for cinematic merit, relevance to Southeastern Michigan, and creative messaging.  The panel of judges includes independent directors, environmental activists, community activist, a youth activist, and a journalist.

“This project is an excellent way for our students to interact with the community and to get excited about the environmental projects that we have started at our school,” said Greg Willerer, University Preparatory Academy Middle School teacher. Entries this year range from an up close and personal look at a the effects of the Detroit incinerator on our health to big picture issues like global warming.
