Classically trained in both photography and oil painting, these two talents are synthesized together harmoniously in her hand-illustrated photographs. Further, her reliance on the subject matter for inspiration and her use of natural light makes her work stand out. Izzo in her own words says, “the camera, the subject, and the photographer are connected by the same creative spirit.”

River’s Edge Gallery presents the Yin & Yang of photography, a fine art photography show featuring new work by Patricia Izzo and new and classical work by Monte Nagler. The show opens with a private reception on September 12th and continues through November 30th with a public opening planned on September 18th, 6pm-10pm. . For the first time the gallery will also invite anyone, anywhere to visit their website, www.artattheedge.com , to view and purchase from this show. “It’s a new concept.” stated Jeremy Hansen, gallery director. “Carrying all local and regional artists and probably having one of the largest displays of Michigan artists under one roof, we want to get the word out beyond our borders of the talent existing in Metro Detroit. Not everyone is going to be able to make the opening in person but they can attend on line.” Hansen explained.

NEW WORK BY PATRICIA IZZO AND MONTE NAGLER
PRIVATE OPENING: SEPTEMBER 12TH 6-9 PM (PLEASE CALL FOR INVITATIONS)
PUBLIC OPENING: SEPTEMBER 18TH 6 TO 10 PM
CLOSING RECEPTION: OCTOBER 16TH 6 TO 10 PM

This art exhibit showcases two highly successful museum fine art photographers working on two opposite ends of the spectrum. Gallery owner, Patricia Slack, said “Fine art photography is often misrepresented by the point and shoot and mediocre representations of this art form. It doesn’t show the art of getting the shot at the moment, on location, during the shoot. You can’t make a mediocre shot look like a fine art piece with photoshop and cropping. The artist must have a vision going into it and know what he/she is doing when they are capturing the image through their lens. Then, what they do with it, how they print it, on what they print it on and the other side of the creative process can happen.”

Slack says she sees Patricia Izzo as representing the Yin (moon) side of the show and Monte Nagler as the Yang. “Yin is dark and soft and round and shadowy and feminine. Yang is sun and sharp and squares and strong and masculine.” added Slack.

Both artists have huge reputations. Patricia Izzo was recently recognized by American Photo magazine as one of the “hottest new talents” and an artist “destined for big things.” This premier national magazine, showcasing the work of professional photographers, singled out her work from nearly 50,000 submissions. Izzo is classically trained in both photography and oil painting. These two talents are synthesized together harmoniously in her hand-illustrated photographs (black and white photos which are then hand painted) which are included in the show. Her reliance on the subject matter for inspiration and her use of natural light and her choice of using film rather than digital, makes her work stand out. Izzo, in her own words, says, “the camera, the subject, and the photographer are connected by the same creative spirit.” Izzo’s work is in many public and private collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Monte Nagler began photographing seriously after studying with Ansel Adams. “It was during that period of intensive work that I realized that making photographs is a way to experience beauty instead of just looking at it,” Nagler says. He believes that photographers should communicate feelings that are inside them. Through their photographs, a photographer should be saying: “This is what I saw and felt and I’d like to share that!”

Monte is a noted writer, lecturer and teacher of photography. He has conducted many classes and seminars throughout the states. Not only has he written a nationally syndicated photography column, but he is also the author of three highly successful photography books; How To Improve Your Photographic Vision, Statements of Light and the third, Monte Nagler’s Michigan which Governor Granholm wrote the forward to and gives out as a state gift. Monte was also the National Fine Arts Photography spokesperson for the Chevrolet Tahoe. His work is in many private and public collections including the Detroit Institute of Art.

Both have been working for a long period of time preparing for this show. Izzo has 2 years of “veiled” work that she is now “unveiling”. “I thought is was important to have work that no one had seen. This work, like all my series before, is very autobiographical. It has meaning to this time in my life.” Monte Nagler has decided to show new and classical work. Both will be on the second floor of River’s Edge Gallery at 3024 Biddle in downtown Wyandotte. A private reception will be held on September 12th from 6 pm to 9 pm with both artists in attendance. Invitations can be requested by calling the gallery at 734-246-9880. A public reception is planned for September 18th during the usual Wyandotte Third Friday festivities as well a closing reception on October 16th, 6pm to 10 pm.
