For decades, some of the most entertaining, witty and creative examples of “short-form” filmmaking have been found among Britain’s ingenious and groundbreaking television commercials. Each year, the jurors of the 2009 British Television Advertising Awards (BTAA) select the best of the best and assemble the ads into a tour that is presented at cultural institutions worldwide. For the first time, the Detroit Film Theatre of the Detroit Institute of Arts will join this distinguished group of host institutions when it presents the 2009 tour for two weekends, beginning on October 30th.
These cutting-edge mini-productions, which this year pitch everything from chocolate Easter eggs to Stanley Kubrick film retrospectives, have traditionally served as a launching pad for the careers of some of the most innovative of future filmmakers, including Ridley Scott (Alien), Hugh Hudson (Chariots of Fire) and Alan Parker (Midnight Express), as well as the many young visionaries whose work will be discovered in this year’s program.
The complete 2009 BTAA program runs approximately 85 minutes; all of the 2009 winners will be seen at each performance. Because of the sometimes frank nature of many of these ads, we’re recommending the program for audiences 16 years of age and older.
