‘Jide Aje was educated in Nigeria and the United States. After earning a Fine Art degree from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife Nigeria, he relocated to the United States to pursue a career in the creative design field. Attracted to the automotive industry, ‘Jide is a relatively recent addition to the Metro Detroit area arts scene. His first show in the area was with the Redd Apple Gallery, Detroit in 2004. He is an active member of several arts and cultural organizations. His studio is based in the City of Hamtramck, Michigan.

‘Jide Aje says of his work: “The deep analysis and description of my work is probably best left for more competent minds. I would say my work is simply the result of constant search and experimentation or the product of creative freedom in which the process is more important than outcome.

I’m a product of the convergence of several influences, experiences and traditions, for example; the African and the European/Western, the traditional and modern, formal and informal, urban and rural.

We can therefore conclude I’m many things: an American raised in Africa and at the same time an African artist living and working in diaspora. Much of my early and formative exposure to drawing, creation and art happened in my elementary school years. Under the tutelage of Rowland Abiodun, Moyo Okediji and Bolaji Campbell. I would later earn a Bachelors in Fine Art (Painting major) from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. This was an experience that has served me well.

My work deals with several themes and I employ several techniques. African, especially West African motifs and iconology are frequently incorporated. While new concepts and ideas happen quickly, gestation periods can be frustratingly long.In fact I do find myself returning to rework decade old paintings.”

Formed in April 2006, Hatch is the brainchild of Hatch president Christopher Schneider and Erik Tungate, Hamtramck’s former Director of Community & Economic Development. They keep a full calendar with continuous group, solo and juried exhibitions at Cafe 1923, 2287 Holbrook, Hamtramck, MI

  1. Jide’s work is always so alive and full of symbolism. His colors draw you in and hold you there. His world makes you ask yourself “Who am I”? There are many twists and turns, surprises and joy, snags and detours but never a stumble. Simple in its complexity, uplifting in its spirit, aptly named and totally delightful.
