The Grosse Pointe Art Center will host it’s third annual URBAN EDGE Exhibit in the gallery located at 16900 Kercheval in the City of Grosse Pointe . The exhibit opens January 22 and ends March 6, 2010. The social and political challenges of our cities are sometimes surrounded by rich visual beauty. This exhibit will allow artists to showcase their personal expressions of the complexities urban life in the medium of their choice.
The Metropolitan Detroit community produces fresh and vital artwork and the Urban Edge will highlight numerous talented artists from the Tri-County area, as selected by juror Taurus Burns. Mr. Burns moved to Detroit in 1998 to study painting at the College for Creative Studies. Since graduating with High Honors in 2002, he has exhibited regularly and been an active figure in the Detroit art scene. Taurus has been involved in several public art projects, including Tiger Town and the Detroit Festival of the Arts “Street Painting” Exhibitions. Mr. Burns was listed as one of the “Best Local Artists to Collect” in the 2007 Best of Detroit issue of Hour Magazine. He has completed numerous commissioned paintings and murals. In September 2009, Burns curated a show of local urban landscape paintings at the Cass Café. Taurus continues to develop his own blend of figurative narrative painting and urban realism. It is with great pleasure that the Grosse Pointe Art Center welcomes his involvement as juror for the 2010 Urban Edge Exhibit.
The Grosse Pointe Art Center supports artistic interest and talent in the visual, literary and performing arts and provides a venue for the community to share in these creative experiences. From modest beginnings in 1927, GPAC today stages exhibitions, competitions and concerts, and conducts classes, lectures and workshops for children and adults. The GPAC Gallery Gift Shop offers a wide variety of original works by established and emerging local, national and international artists.
