The Heidelberg Project is partnering with Atlas Obscura to offer free tours on Obscura Day, an international celebration of curious places happening around the world on March 20, 2010. from 1-3pm. Learn about the Heidelberg Project history from knowledgeable staff, docents and volunteers, and interact with other visitors.

Not local to Michigan, Atlas Obscura has partnered with other hosting sites all over the world – check out other Obscura Day events nationally and internationally. The event was developed to encourage all of us to get out and explore, and celebrate the unusual places near us.

Founded by science journalist Joshua Foer and travel writer Dylan Thuras in 2009, the Atlas Obscura is a collaborative project with the goal of cataloging all of

the singular, eccentric, bizarre, fantastical, and strange out-of-the-way places that get left out of traditional travel guidebooks and are ignored by the average tourist. The Atlas Obscura team now includes more than a dozen dedicated writers and editors, as well as hundreds of contributors from all over the world. Obscura Day events are being hosted by Atlas Obscura members as well as like-minded obscuraphiles like the blog Morbid Anatomy (http://morbidanatomy.blogspot.com/) , BLDGBLOG (http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/), and guides from Medical London (http://www.medicallondon.org/) – not to mention hosts from the museums and other unusual places we’ve written about.

The Heidelberg Project is an outsider art environment in the heart of an urban community on Detroit’s East Side. Tyree Guyton, founder and artistic director, has used everyday, discarded objects to create a two-block area full of color and intrigue. Several knowledgeable docents will be available on site during the day to lead mini-tours of the project.

This event is free to the public. If you plan on attending, please RSVP – tickets are not necessary; Atlas Obscura is estimating attendance via their website http://atlasobscura.com/.
