The College for Creative Studies, Fine Arts Department is proud to present HELP THY
KINGDOM RESOLVE, a group exhibition featuring new projects by Joanna Care, Andrea
Del Rio, Tyler Delor, Anthony Eritano, Nicole Housey, Lucas Korte, Alexandra Mank, Sean
Maxwell, Krystal Mukhtar, Jesse Snow Stephen Szymanski, Karleigh Thompson and Layla
Weidner. The opening reception will be held Friday April 29, 2011 from 4-7pm at the
Russell Industrial Center, building 1, 4th floor, 1600 Clay St., Detroit, MI, 48211.

HELP THY KINGDOM RESOLVE is a manifestation of the notion that constructing the right
situation for dialog and a sense of community within the context of a given class
dynamic can lead to tremendous ambition, through which anything is possible. The
students in Introduction to Painting, taught by Brian Barr were asked to submit
professional quality proposals for ambitious, independent projects to be installed or
executed on site. The proposals included detailed drawings of how the space was
envisioned, a written component outlining the contextual framework for their vision, and
research in the form of articles and artists working in the same field of research. Once
their projects were approved the students hit the ground running on realizing projects
whose scale, scope and conceptual clarity defy conventional expectations of a
freshman level painting course.

Introduction to Painting is a studio and a lecture course, designed to provide a strong
foundation of the basic materials and techniques of painting, historical awareness of the
genealogy and evolution of painting as an institution and medium, as well as an
introduction to contemporary ideas and practices. All of this is done through lectures,
readings, group discussions, as well as artists visiting from across the country. An
imperative of this course is to understand and re-think what painting is and how it can
relate to the world around us, as well as how, through constant critique and intervention
painting can be a vital part of an expanding art world.

And the possibility of a separate showing of Michelle Tanguay’s newest works. (We just did a critique of all of the work from Concepts and Images and many works are still up, so there’s a chance you could get a glance of their final body of work.)
