Visions: Tim Hetherington — Inaugural Exhibit at Bronx Documentary Center

Visions: Tim Hetherington, on View at the Bronx Documentary Center

On occasion, we will announce cultural events that take place in other art destinations, and we will interview experts and cultural role models outside of Michigan. We believe it is important for Detroiters to be inspired from what’s going on globally, so that they can in turn inspire globally.

I was particularly moved by a new photography and multimedia exhibit of a photo journalist that was killed tragically as he covered Libya’s revolution.

This exhibition opens tomorrow Saturday, October 22, 2011, at the Bronx Documentary Center (“BDC”). The show is titled, Visions: Tim Hetherington, and it is the first exhibition of Hetherington’s final photographs since his death in Misurata, Libya, on April 20, 2011.

The BDC was kind enough to share a couple of his pieces with us. These are raw images where Tim explores the intersection of war as theatre and simulated masculinity.

Tim explained how the Libyan rebel’s were “parading around imitating something they saw in a war movie.” These images and Tim’s observations are particularly poignant after yesterday’s disturbing images of Gaddafi’s murder in Libya.

The BDC is a non-profit gallery and educational space dedicated to documentary projects. BDC will develop a series of exhibitions and educational programs to help connect its community with international events. Hetherington’s close friend and fellow photo journalist Michael Kamber and former Magnum Photos Exhibition Organizer Danielle Jackson founded the center this year.
