Saturday from 5-9 p.m.
Over 60 Midtown venues, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Science Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Detroit Public Library open their doors to the public free of charge during this Cultural Center-wide holiday “open house.” Activities include horse-drawn carriage rides, family craft activities, and performances by more than 120 area music, theatre, and dance groups. The evening’s festivities culminate with a community sing-along on Woodward Avenue led by the Salvation Army Band.  read more

Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus
Through February 12, 2012
 

 

Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus brings together for the first time many of Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn’s finest paintings, prints and drawings that portray Jesus and events described in the Bible. The exhibition of 64 works includes approximately 52 small, intimate paintings, prints and drawings by Rembrandt and his students revealing how Rembrandt broke from traditional 17th-century representations of Jesus. Read more and download a coupon to receive $6 off exhibition tickets, valid December 4-23.

 

 

 

 

Detroit Revealed: Photographs 2000-2010
Through April 8, 2012
 

 

Contemporary artists present photographs and video inspired by Detroit, its people, diverse culture, and industries in work created from 2000-2010. The exhibition includes more than 50 photographs by artists including Michelle Andonian, Carlos Diaz, and Scott Hocking. Gift of a Lifetime: The James Pearson Duffy Collection
Through March 18, 2012
The Detroit Institute of Arts recently received a generous bequest from James Pearson Duffy, one of Detroit’s most unorthodox collectors. Gift of a Lifetime: The James Pearson Duffy Collection showcases his varied collection of drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures, and photographs. The exhibition is organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts and is free with museum admission. Special Exhibition Central, 2nd level. read more

Mike Garson: Bowie Variations

Mike Garson has been adding his unique piano style to David Bowie compositions since he was asked by Mick Ronson to join Bowie’s first North American tour in 1971. Garson devotes this evening’s performance to that music, interpreting David Bowie classics for solo piano. Rivera Court, 2nd level. read more
Sunday Music Bar: Detroit Tenors
Sunday at 1 & 3 p.m. 
 

 

Detroit Tenors, led by Steve Wood and Carl Cafagna is a tribute to the great saxophone pairings of the 1940s and ’50s, such as Gene Ammons/Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon/Wardell Gray, and Johnny Griffin/Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. The Detroit Tenors also takes this tradition into the modern era with arrangements from the other “tenor-centric” bands of Elvin Jones and his contemporaries.
