Over 20 Detroit bands have come together to raise money for victims of the Haitian earthquake. Detroit Rocks For Haiti takes place on Friday, January 29th and Saturday, January 30th at the Magic Stick in Detroit.

Papa Joe Zainea (co-owner of the Majestic Theatre Center) approached retired Detroit Bishop Thomas Gumbleton and asked if there was a way the Majestic could help. Bishop Gumbleton was instrumental in starting a clinic in Port Au Prince three years ago called Klinik Sen Michel. The Bishop is taking a group down to Haiti at the end of January to provide medical assistance to the many earthquake victims.

Doors for the event open at 8pm each night and music starts promptly at 8:30pm. The minimum donation for each night of the benefit is $8 but larger donations will be accepted.

For those that can’t make it down to the event, there is information on how to make a contribution on Bishop Gumbleton’s website: www.bishopgumbleton.org.

Net proceeds from the event will help Bishop Gumbleton purchase medical supplies to take with his team to Klinik Sen Michel – bandages, analgesics, antibiotics, ointments, antiseptics, etc.

Travel back in time to the decade of decadence- the‘80s-this holiday season to revisit a Detroit dance club that was the epitome of ‘80s glory. Todd’s, formally known as Todd’s Sway Lounge, was a gay nightclub on Detroit’s far eastside that was on the cutting edge of the new wave of eighties music and lifestyle.

Detroit club impresario- Stirling, first approached the owners of the venue in 1983 and convinced them to try out a dance music night on Monday evenings to cater to a growing subculture of club kids. The owners welcomed this idea, and a new dance party was launched. Stirling hired the eclectic DJ Charles English to spin the latest in dance music, Euro-pop, new wave and even some punk classics and funk gems thrown into the explosive mix of music that had the patrons up and dancing the night away. When Monday nights became thee popular weekly destination, they expanded to Thursday nights as well. The nightclub was one-of-a-kind as it featured more than just a dance floor. A basement theater was dubbed “the video coffin” that showed cult films and videos courtesy of host Kory Clarke (later of the band Warrior Soul), upstairs featured Benson’s couture clothing boutique called “Transvestia Dementia” (and later turned into a record store “Blitz Records” run by Michael Fiscus) and the vintage clothing/record store/ art gallery called “Chaos,” run by promoter Sue Static. The Todd’s dance parties became a main component of ‘80s subculture here in the city. The party lasted for almost a decade, up until the club changed ownership in the early ‘90s.

There will be two Todd’s reunion nights coming up on Saturday, November 28 and Wednesday, December 23 for patrons of the club to revisit the music and friends of this era. The reunions are hosted by Stirling and Sue Static and feature DJ Charles English spinning the familiar tunes that had you dancing decades ago. The nights will feature drink specials of the drinks that the bar made famous, photo collages from that era and online access to chat with Todd’s fans across the country. One special out of town guest returning for the reunion is Benson. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit MAPP (Midwest AIDS Prevention Project) in honor of the many Todd’s employees.

Cass Cafe

The Cass Collective is a loose group of community people who organize monthly benefit shows at the Cass Cafe on the last Sunday of each month. It is also connected to the Alley Cats, a group of cyclists that end their city excursions at the Cass Cafe on the same day. Performing this Sunday are Floating Heads, Demons, Mother Whale, Velveteen Rabbit, Uneven Universe and DJ Khrust.

The shows are always free and a portion of the bar sales go to cool projects in the area. Some groups the collective have helped include the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, The Trumbullplex, The Hub of Detroit , Detroit Summer, thedetroiter.com and others.

Day 1: a workshop with Faust. Learn the “Faust method” and jam with Faust in real life.

Day 2: a performance by legendary art rockers Faust. They wrote the song Krautrock and gave the genre it’s name.

Formed 1969 in Hamburg, Germany and considered the inventors of ‘Kraut Rock’, iconoclasts extraordinaire Faust are key figures in 20th Century music. In the early 70’s, along with Can and Kraftwerk, they re-invented pop music as a specifically European art-form. In their own studio they were able to revolutionize the whole process of musical production; they improvised with industrial noise, generated bizarre hypnotic grooves, indulged in shockingly willful studio-based collages, and dabbled with every conceivable musical genre, sometimes simultaneously. Every now and then they found time for a burst of satirical pop or waves of delicate ambience. Amongst those Faust have strongly influenced we can include Brian Eno, Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Test Department, Neubauten, My Bloody Valentine, Julian Cope, Sonic Youth and a host of Industrial and Techno groups. The music on their classic recordings has lost none of its immediacy or relevance – it sounds as if it was recorded last week, not last decade.

Faust has performed and collaborated with Nurse with Wound, Ulan Bator, Henry Cow, Tony Conrad, Pascal Comelade, and Jim O’Rourke among many others. Faust’s early outré experiments with studio techniques and their pioneering use of electronics have become a major influence on many of the most progressive acts of the 1970’s in Germany and abroad as a result opening the gates for today’s most progressive sounds.

The touring members of this 2009 US Faust tour are original members Jean-Herve Peron and Werner “Zappi” Diermaier, along with James Johnston (Gallon Drunk, Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) and visual/video artist, painter and musician Geraldine Swayne.

WORKSHOP:

The Faust workshop is open for both direct audience participation as well as passive viewing. Active participants must bring their own musical instruments/sound-creating devices. The number of “active participants” will be limited to 30. In order to be a “active participant” tickets must be bought in advance.

The workshop’s objective is the creation of an interactive, dynamic situation for exploring communication and exchange via live musical presentation, improvisation, and discussion, the ultimate goal is “liberating and enhancing creativity” as well as “reducing established patterns of control”. The workshop relies heavily on audience participation; the active participants are encouraged to bring small or pared-down instruments (e.g. no huge amplifiers, not too many effects pedals, etc).

The workshop begins with an open discussion between Faust and all attendees, which transitions into an improvisational exchange between the members of Faust and the participating audience members using sound-making devices/instruments. The workshop structure is fluid and open to the influence of circumstance and of each individual participant. The end result of the Faust workshop will be a completed piece of music, which has evolved from the collaborative inputs of all active participants.

Often considered one of the most “out there” groups of the 1970’s, Faust ‘s live performances are more than simple rock concerts. They are interactive, staged events; replete with projections, live painting, power tools and the inimitable sounds of Faust. The live Faust sound cannot be encapsulated, wandering from space-age, ambient drone, to one chord symphonies and psyche-rock infused electronica. Faust’s first appearance in Detroit promises to be a memorable and singular experience.

Performing first on this very special evening will be Indian Jewelry, an ever-evolving, psychedelic, electronic rock ensemble from Houston, Texas.
