Incorporating the grit of local industry with the hard edged toughness of the inner city area that it took its name from, the Cass Corridor Art Scene was not only a vital art movement in Detroit in the 1960’s and 1970’s, but also grew to obtain national recognition as a major art movement of the era. As “the corridor” quieted down in the mid 1970’s, the post Cass Corridor “Cass Corridor Art Scene” found a new home in an old clothing store that had been turned into an artist run exhibition space, Michigan Gallery.

Michigan Gallery became a cornerstone of the Detroit art scene throughout much of the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s. From its conception in 1973 until its ultimate closing in 1998, Detroit’s most thought provoking and provocative exhibitions were typically at Michigan Gallery.

As Carl Kamulski, one of the founders of this space, and long time its Executive Director, nears retirement after close to 40 years of teaching, HFCC’s Sisson Gallery has put forth a stunning exhibition to pay tribute to both him and to the importance of Michigan Gallery within the Detroit art community.

The Motor City Revue 2010 opened Wednesday, January 27, 2010. There will be a closing reception, called “Michigan Gallery’s Farewell Blast” on Friday, March 5, 2010 from 6:00 – 8:00pm at the Sisson Gallery. This event is free and all are invited. Refreshments will be served and a there will be a musical performance by “Two Guitars: Ron Butzu and Marc Machaud.” Following the reception there will be an after party at Alvin’s. Alvin’s is located at 5756 Cass Ave. in Detroit. The after party will feature the music of The Howling Diablos along with a performance by Satori Circus. Tickets for the after party are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. Along with advance ticket purchase one gets a collectable “Motor City Review 2010” button. Advance tickets will be available at the Closing Reception.

The Sisson Gallery is located in the MacKenzie Fine Arts Building on the main campus of Henry Ford Community College, located at 5101 Evergreen in Dearborn, MI. The gallery is will be open from 10am – 6pm on M,T,W and TH and 10am – 3pm on F throughout the exhibition. The gallery may also be open by special appointment during “off” hours. For further information, contact Steve Glazer at 313-845-6485, 313-845-6476 or 313-671-2048 (during non-business hours) or sglazer@hfcc.edu.

Over 20 Detroit bands have come together to raise money for victims of the Haitian earthquake. Detroit Rocks For Haiti takes place on Friday, January 29th and Saturday, January 30th at the Magic Stick in Detroit.

Papa Joe Zainea (co-owner of the Majestic Theatre Center) approached retired Detroit Bishop Thomas Gumbleton and asked if there was a way the Majestic could help. Bishop Gumbleton was instrumental in starting a clinic in Port Au Prince three years ago called Klinik Sen Michel. The Bishop is taking a group down to Haiti at the end of January to provide medical assistance to the many earthquake victims.

Doors for the event open at 8pm each night and music starts promptly at 8:30pm. The minimum donation for each night of the benefit is $8 but larger donations will be accepted.

For those that can’t make it down to the event, there is information on how to make a contribution on Bishop Gumbleton’s website: www.bishopgumbleton.org.

Net proceeds from the event will help Bishop Gumbleton purchase medical supplies to take with his team to Klinik Sen Michel – bandages, analgesics, antibiotics, ointments, antiseptics, etc.

Canonized, marginalized or just scrutinized, Meshell Ndegeocello has given up trying to explain or categorize herself. After 20 years in an industry that has called her everything from avant-garde to a dying breed, what unquestionably remains is the fearless bassist, prolific songwriter and the creativity and curiosity of an authentic musical force. With that, she has earned critical acclaim, the unfailing respect of fellow musicians, songwriters and composers, and the dedication of her diverse and loyal fan base.

Ndegeocello, which means “free like a bird” is an American singer-songwriter, rapper, bassist, and multi-instrumentalist; her music incorporates funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, R&B, rock, and jazz. Having received critical acclaim and ten career Grammy Award nominations, she is often credited for having sparked the neo-soul movement. Also to her credit, her music has been featured in a number of film soundtracks.

Music Hall presents Meshell Ndegeocello, Thursday, October 15th as she brings a crack band of sidemen in support of her eighth and latest album, “Devil’s Halo”, which is a return to a live band energy, with a focus on musicianship and not on synthetic digital accoutrements. Devils Halo seems influenced as much by Yes as it is by Wu Tang or Living Colour which underscores Ndegeocello’s wide ranging influences.

Ndegeocello is the German born, daughter of an American Army Lieutenant and saxophone player, who has garnered 10 Grammy Award nominations and has worked with a diverse and eclectic group of A-List artists including, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Basement Jaxx and John Mellencamp, whose duet on a cover of Van Morrison’s, “Wild Night” was a Top 3 Smash hit for both in 1994. She is often credited to have sparked the Neo Soul movement of the 1990’s and has contributed songs to over a half dozen film soundtracks including, “How Stella Got Her Groove Back”.

Vocalist Julie Marcos of Coup Detroit, one of several
groups replacing Buju Banton at The Magic Stick

Affirmations, Transgender Detroit and Triangle Foundation worked together to encourage the cancellation of the Buju Banton concert in Detroit. Please join us in turning a hateful night into one filled with supportive and powerful music from the Detroit area’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Confirmed performers include: Ami Matteson, Andrea Wilson, The Big Pink Black, Chantel & Youth Montage, Cheryl Strebel, Coup Detroit, Jocelyn B “Bitch” of the Blues, Leslie Thompson, Steffie & the Dirty Virgins. More artists are pending confirmation. Join us Wednesday, September 30th at the Magic Stick http://www.majesticdetroit.com/stick.asp . Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets are just $10.

Here is a statement from Detroit’s Majestic Theatre about these events help thank them by attending the event:

“The Buju Banton concert that was to be held at the Majestic Theatre on Wednesday, September 30th has been cancelled. This was an incredibly tough decision for us both philosophically and economically. If we had known that there was any controversy surrounding this artist, we would have never even considered booking him. We do not condone any form of hate speech. We have struggled to get out of our contract for over a month to no avail. The Majestic is in essence a family-run small business. It is next to impossible to simply cancel a show without major financial consequences. Yet, that is what we have done.”

“We feel that our decision to cancel the show is less about making a statement on free speech and more about continuing to provide a welcoming atmosphere for all people. Over the past month, our friends and neighbors within various LBGT groups have reached out to us and expressed deep concern over Buju’s past comments and song lyrics. For decades, The Majestic has been a haven for unique events and people from all walks of life. At this point and time, Detroiters need to stand together more than ever. We could not allow one event to create a divide. We hope that you continue your support and patronage of The Majestic.” -The Zainea Family
