On the Rocks Detroit will host a weekend of official Autorama After-Parties at Detroit’s Hard Rock Café (45 Monroe St.) on Friday, February 26 and Saturday, February 27 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. to celebrate Autorama – a fantastic display of muscle cars and hot rods from past and present, held at Cobo Hall that same weekend. Tickets for each party are $10 and are available by calling the Hard Rock Café at 313-964-2683 via email: detroit_sales@hardrock.com, or at the door. All ages are welcome to attend.

The Hard Rock Café will also provide complimentary shuttle service to and from the parties – picking up at Cobo Hall and the Book Cadillac (Autorama’s official hotel).

On Friday night, Brighton, Michigan custom car builders Mobsteel will be the VIP sponsors, playing host to the nights’ festivities. While open to the public, guests of Mobsteel will include representatives of such companies as Pirelli Tires,

Dynamat, Magnaflow and Webb Automotive Art along with many of MobSteel’s celebrity clients. Friday night party-goers will also be treated to live performances by Kid Rock protégé and Atlantic Recording Artist Ty Stone and award-winning alt-country band The Orbitsuns (featuring Vinnie from Sponge).

On Saturday night attendees will enjoy performances by veteran Detroit Blues-rockers The Reefermen, and straight up knock -em down Rock & Roll by The Shram Band and 60 Second Crush.
.
Both nights will feature a custom auto display in the beautiful Compuware atrium courtesy of Mobsteel. Some of the hot rides on display will include a 1964 Lincoln Continental convertible owned by Pure Records CEO Joe Safina, Ty Stone’s pimped out “Ty Roc,” and a 2010 450 HP Ford Taurus SHO, customized by Mobsteel.

The Orbitsuns

In addition to the hot live music and cars, a charity raffle with many cool automotive-related prizes from Pirelli Tires, Dynamat and more – plus music memorabilia courtesy of Hard Rock Cafe, will raise funds to benefit Musicians on Call. Musicians On Call, a nonprofit organization formed in 1999, brings live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients in healthcare facilities. Musicians On Call uses live and recorded music to promote and complement the healing process for patients, families and caregivers. Funds raised from both nights will go directly towards creating a Musicians on Call program at Detroit’s Children Hospital.

Don’t miss what’s sure to be the hottest weekend of cool cars and live music at Detroit’s Hard Rock Café!

Good Luck (bloomington, in) have been winning hearts and minds everywhere they’ve visited for a few years now, and for good reason. They brought down the Cass Cafe on their first visit to Detroit a few years ago and have returned to Trumbullplex several times since. (www.myspace.com/wearegoodluck)

Michigan’s own Cheap Girls (lansing) are singlehandedly making the 90s cool again, resurrecting powerpop slacker rock along the lines of Dinosaur Jr. and the Lemonheads. The Internet loved their new record, “My Roaring 20s”. Don’t let the bloggers beat you to the punch, Michigan! (www.myspace.com/cheapgirls)

DIY punk stalwarts the Max Levine Ensemble and Delay are both on tour, from DC and Columbus respectively. TMLE may be on their last tour (though they said that last time), and Delay has a new record on Detroit’s own Salinas. The kids (and some of us older folks too) are pumped!

Even the local watering holes are feeling the pinch from the chaos created by the Matty Maroun bridge brawl in southwest Detroit. Shannon Lowell of Donovan’s Pub — a family-owned business that rests in the middle of the Gate Way Project — has seen his business all but disappear since construction around his small bar commenced in August of 2007. Parking and driving in his neighborhood has gotten so bad, Lowell is simply trying to raise enough funds to pay his taxes and keep his doors open.

Having tried an array of marketing campaigns to no avail, Lowell’s musician friends have jumped in to save the day. One of his good friends, legendary folk-rock singer Rodriguez has generously donated a free show to help Lowell at least recoup enough money to pay his City taxes. This event will take place on Monday, Nov. 2 at Donovan’s Pub (3003 W. Vernor, Detroit; 313-964-2267). Set time is 9:30 p.m., so get there early! And can you believe…NO COVER!

groups replacing Buju Banton at The Magic Stick

Affirmations, Transgender Detroit and Triangle Foundation worked together to encourage the cancellation of the Buju Banton concert in Detroit. Please join us in turning a hateful night into one filled with supportive and powerful music from the Detroit area’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Confirmed performers include: Ami Matteson, Andrea Wilson, The Big Pink Black, Chantel & Youth Montage, Cheryl Strebel, Coup Detroit, Jocelyn B “Bitch” of the Blues, Leslie Thompson, Steffie & the Dirty Virgins. More artists are pending confirmation. Join us Wednesday, September 30th at the Magic Stick http://www.majesticdetroit.com/stick.asp . Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets are just $10.

Here is a statement from Detroit’s Majestic Theatre about these events help thank them by attending the event:

“The Buju Banton concert that was to be held at the Majestic Theatre on Wednesday, September 30th has been cancelled. This was an incredibly tough decision for us both philosophically and economically. If we had known that there was any controversy surrounding this artist, we would have never even considered booking him. We do not condone any form of hate speech. We have struggled to get out of our contract for over a month to no avail. The Majestic is in essence a family-run small business. It is next to impossible to simply cancel a show without major financial consequences. Yet, that is what we have done.”

“We feel that our decision to cancel the show is less about making a statement on free speech and more about continuing to provide a welcoming atmosphere for all people. Over the past month, our friends and neighbors within various LBGT groups have reached out to us and expressed deep concern over Buju’s past comments and song lyrics. For decades, The Majestic has been a haven for unique events and people from all walks of life. At this point and time, Detroiters need to stand together more than ever. We could not allow one event to create a divide. We hope that you continue your support and patronage of The Majestic.” -The Zainea Family

The Rationals were one of the first Detroit area bands to get their music played on the radio in the late 1960’s, kicking the door open for Bob Seger, The MC5 and The Stooges to burst through. The band’s mix of Beatles-esque harmonies and soul influences have made their records some of the most sought after and hard to find in the Motorcity… that is until now! Scott Morgan and his band (Matt Smith, Jim Diamond, Dave Shettler & Chris Taylor ) celebrate the release of their brand new 2 CD anthology “Think Rational” with a rockin’ soulful trip down memory lane. The CD was produced by Alec Palao who also produced Rhino’s Nuggets box sets. As a special treat the Howling Diablos and the Space Heaters kick off the show!
