Searching for an actor for Sir Willful Witwoud in The Way of the World

It’s The Way of the World by William Congreve, the classic Restoration comedy. I’m the director. I’m tackling it as the story of Mirabell and Millamant, two arch-libertines of a society of libertines who decide to find a way out of that world. The character I’m casting, Sir Willful Witwoud, is a country gentleman who agrees to help Mirabell carry out the intrigues that will allow him (Mirabell) to marry Millamant against the schemes of Fainall, who is after Millamant’s money.

Here’s a good description of his character:

“Bashful and obstinate by turns, feisty and deferential when necessary, a country bumpkin with a good nature and a will to please, Sir Wilfull Witwoud, half brother by marriage to Witwoud, would be a wit if he could. He has come to town to look around before setting out on his travels and finds he doesn’t understand the “lingo” of the fashionable world. He serves as a foil to the well bred. In contrast to their studied rudeness and affectation, he is simple and matter-of-fact. Thus, he is an easy mark in the scheming game of matchmaking, but a cheerful one, especially after a long bout of drinking. In a show of generosity and an imposture of sincerity, he gladly agrees to marry Millamant as a last resort to save her fortune. However, he also dissembles well. His is but another actor in Mirabell’s clever ruse to catch Fainall and Mrs. Marwood in their deception and to lure Lady Wishfort into his harmless trap.”

Performances are April 15-18 (evening shows except Sunday matinee.) The cast is a mixture of students and people from the community.

It’ll be performed in the Kreft Art Center Black Box on the Concordia campus. The age of the character is somewhat indeterminate, but he’s not a young man anymore; figure him to play anywhere from late 30’s to 50’s. Rehearsals have begun; they are in the evenings Monday-Friday until the weekend before the show.

The Murder at the Ford Rouge Plant: An Original Jazz-Folk Opera
Elise Bryant, Director; Bill Meyer, Music Director; Sam Kirkland and Dave Elsila, Producers

“FORGOTTEN: The Murder at the Ford Rouge Plant” will be presented at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, March 26, 2010. Elise Bryant will direct this new production, and Bill Meyer will serve as music director.

“FORGOTTEN” is an original jazz-folk opera by composer Steve Jones about the 1930s and the Great Depression in Detroit. It focuses on the real-life story of the Rev. Lewis Bradford, a Methodist minister who came to Detroit in 1936 and broadcast a weekly radio show over station WXYZ, “The Forgotten Man’s Hour” from the Howard Street Mission. Bradford was found fatally injured at the Ford River Rouge plant. An examination of the autopsy report led the Wayne County Medical Examiner to conclude that Bradford’s death should probably have been classified as a homicide.

Previously produced in Detroit in 2004 and 2005, this production is funded with donations and grants from individuals as well as nonprofit groups including the Michigan Labor History Society, the Ovshinsky Foundation, and the U.S. Peace Council, and by Macomb Community College. Target audiences include students at Macomb Community College and at local high schools as well as the general public. There are approximately eight principal cast members and a chorus of approximately 22.

Auditions for the cast and chorus will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. (all should arrive by 6:30), and on Saturday, January 30 from 12 noon to 3 p.m. (all should arrive by 12 noon)

Audition participants are requested to bring sheet music for the pianist to play while they sing (or be prepared to sing a standard song they think the pianist might know without music). Have a second song ready. NO TAPES, NO A CAPELLA

Callbacks are on Sunday, January 31 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Auditions and callbacks will be held on the second floor at the historic Central United Methodist Church, 23 E. Adams at Grand Circus Park in downtown Detroit. Lighted parking is available behind the church.

Rehearsals in February and March will take place at Central United Methodist Church in preparation for the March 26, 2010 performance.

Book by Hunter Bell

[title of show] is a witty new musical written by two struggling writers about two struggling writers writing a witty new musical. Originally presented at the 2004 New York Musical Theatre Festival, it is a musical about friends putting together a show to be presented at the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

Faced with the festival’s submission deadline, Jeff and Hunter can’t decide what to write about. With friends Susan and Heidi (and Larry on the piano), they come up with a solution – write about what to write about.

[title of show] is a love letter to musical theater – a can’t-miss for those who know Broadway… or want to know Broadway… or just want to get a glimpse into the creative process of putting together a show for Broadway! [title of show] will be directed by Joe Bailey.

Performances will begin on Friday, February 19, 2010 and play through Monday, March 15th, 2010. Performances are Fri/Sat/Mon @ 8PM and Sun @ 3PM.

Rehearsals will be held starting mid-December. Please have ALL conflicts available at auditions.

Please prepare 2 showtunes for the audition:
16 bars from a ballad
16 bars from an uptempo

The audition may also consist of cold readings from the script and you may be asked to learn a harmony part and sing with a small group.

A pianist will be provided at the audition. Please have your sheet music clearly marked.

Fill out the AUDITION FORM at www.whowantscake.com and you will be contacted within 48 hours with a confirmation.

This IS a paying position but NO equity contracts are available.

Please bring a resume and headshot with you to the audition.
