Their Beginning: Artcite opened on May 15th, 1982 after extensive renovations of a nine hundred square foot storefront in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The reception was an overwhelming success with upwards of 300 people crowding into the small space. Working from the fact that Windsor had no alternative art spaces, the sixteen founding members were intent on designing and creating a space which would program contemporary and experimental work by emerging artists in all disciplines.

Mission Statement: Artcite Inc. is Windsor’s non-profit, artist-run centre for the contemporary arts. Founded in 1982, Artcite has operated as an alternative to both the commercial art galleries and to the larger, more mainstream public art galleries. Our mandate goes beyond presenting visual art exhibitions and extends into the programming of workshops, lectures, film and video screenings, performance, and literary events. With the exception of special fundraising projects, these cultural activities are offered to the community free of charge.

Another important mandate for Artcite is to promote professionalism in the arts. This means that we support the artists we exhibit by paying professional artist fees. Additionally, we employ, with the assistance of Employment and Immigration Canada, contract workers who gain the valuable experience and special skills that are unique to arts organizations.

Our programming commitment remains with the younger, or emerging artist, as well as to showing artists that have not shown in this area before. We strive to strike a balance between shows and events as to media, content, gender etc., and will continue to present a diverse range of exhibitions and events that reflect the diversity of current art practices in this community and nationally.

Something Different: Artcite Inc is a non-profit, registered charitable artist-run centre (member of the Canadian Artist-Run Network [ARN] and Artist-Run Centres & Collectives Ontario [ARCCO]). Windsor’s only artist-run centre dedicated exclusively to the presentation and promotion of contemporary and experimental art forms. Artcite is not just Windsor’s artist-run centre for the contemporary arts, but also reaches across the border to speak to the community of metro Detroit and the surrounding area. This unique position has led to a variety of dialogues between the two communities, sometimes in more concrete forms such as gallery exchanges or in the more abstract ongoing exchange of ideas.

Artists Who Have Been Involved with the Space: Allen Bukoff, Susan Gold, Alana Bartol, Justin Langlois, Lisa Bringas, Michael Califano, Irina Teske, Andrew Lochhead, Nadia Schwartzentruger, Yeqiang Wang
