Nicole and Jim at the Micro/Macro exhibition

Their Beginning:
The fourth floor houses the museum, art rooms and exhibition hall. With their abundance of north light, these rooms lend themselves very well to the purpose chosen. Visitors enter the fourth floor art department through solid bronze Gothic gates. The artistry and craftsmanship of the Marygrove grilles greatly resemble Samel Yellin’s installations of the same period at Detroit Institute of Arts and Cranbrook. Margrove’s three bronze gates were in fact, designed and executed by The L. Schreiber & Sons Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, makers of ornamental iron and bronze. The three sets of gates and grilles were commissioned at a cost of $25,000 (Dedication Book of Marygrove College and A Brief History and Architectural Guide 2005).

Mission Statement:

Main gallery:
For over twenty-five years The Gallery at Marygrove College has presented provocative and entertaining art exhibitions. Many consider The Gallery one of Detroit’s cultural gems. Both local and national artists have exhibited in the warm neo-gothic confines of the Liberal Arts Building’s fourth floor. Besides the Detroit art community, The Gallery serves the students. This facility is where the students meet, interact, and critically engage working and exhibiting artists. The Gallery is also the place where scores of students learn how to present and articulate their own visual ideas. The Gallery continues to be a valuable cultural program for Marygrove College and for the Detroit metropolitan artistic community.

Student gallery:
The Student Gallery is a distinct space managed by the Marygrove Art Organization (MAO). With the assistance of faulty and staff, its purpose is to stimulate the visual talents of Marygrove College’s emerging artists. Filled with the energy of aspiring artists, The Student Gallery allows visitors to immerse themselves in student work and allows art students to cultivate their visual ideas through intense research. In addition to The Student Gallery, art majors and art minors are provided with the opportunity to exhibit in an annual all student show displayed in the Main Gallery. The all student exhibition is a massive display where students present current artwork and projects from the past semester. Graduating seniors display thesis work in the Senior Exhibition in months of December and May.

Beyond words:
The Beyond Words Gallery is an extension of The Gallery and of the classroom. A collaboration between the Art Department and the Marygrove College Library, The Beyond Words Gallery enhances the educational experience by providing an additional perspective. It supplies students, faulty, and staff with a visual context.
