A special printmaking class is being offered this Earth Day at the Anton Art Center. Lineoleum Block Printing: Patterns of Spring is for adult students of all levels. Make your own decorative or functional prints for $35 plus a $25 material fee.

A variety of other classes for adults and children will be offered at the Anton Art Center this spring and summer, on subjects such as clay, drawing and painting.

New this term is a series of hands-on workshops for adults – make a ceramic planter, paint tiles and try wet-felting wool!

Two series of workshops aimed at children ages 6 through 12 will help budding artists develop their painting and drawing skills. Both a beginner’s series and an intermediate series will be offered, with all workshops taught by Mount Clemens artist Carolee Schmid. Kids can take one workshop, or all of them!

Advanced art workshops for youth ages 10-13 will also be offered over the summer, with one focusing on 2D art and another on 3D art forms.

Complete summer class information is available at www.theartcenter.org, or by calling the center at 586-469-8666. Enrollment is now open, and many classes fill quickly. Early registration is encouraged.

In recognition of the many artists model Geoge Hardnett, Jr., has inspired, the Anton Art Center announces an exhibition of work based on George, George is the MAN.

The exhibition will be hosted in the Anton Art Center’s Community Gallery, September 15 through 20, 2009. Artists who have used Mr. Hardnett as a model are welcome to apply no later than September 12, 2009. Complete details are available at www.theartcenter.org, or by calling the center at 586-469-8666.

Mr. Hardnett, a Detroit resident, modeled for Cohoctah sculptor Carl Goines’ Walking Man piece, currently on exhibit inside the Anton Art Center. Walking Man is a figurative representation of a nude male.

Walking Man was originally installed in the Anton Art Center’s Bath City Art Park, as part of a temporary outdoor sculpture exhibition. Within 24 hours, the City of Mount Clemens had moved Walking Man inside the center, in response to complaints that the sculpture is inappropriate for public viewing.

In recognition of Mr. Goines’ talent and Mr. Hardnett’s commitment to the metro Detroit arts community, the Anton Art Center seeks to pay tribute to both during the George is the MAN exhibition, which will feature Walking Man in a position of honor.

For more information about the Anton Art Center, or to make a donation or become a member, call the center at 586-469-8666 or visit www.theartcenter.org. The 2009 Mount Clemens Art Fair is free and open to the public.
Invitational exhibit June 6 through July 12, 2009

The Anton Art Center is celebrating 40 years as Macomb County’s premiere visual arts institution.

The Art Center was established October 1, 1969 by “founding mothers” Bea Wright, Gretchen Thompson & Phyllis Wickens. They rescued the old Mount Clemens Public Library building and repurposed it as a space for artists’ studios, classes and galleries.

The Carnegie Library building that houses the center was built in 1904, and is recognized with a Michigan historic marker. In 2005, with the support of the Anton family, the center was renovated and expanded.

Several exhibitions and special events are planned to mark the center’s 40th anniversary.

The celebration begins June 5, 6 and 7, 2009, with the return of the Mount Clemens Art Fair, an independent event showcasing fine arts and crafts, alternative and urban crafts, musical entertainment, children’s activities, displays by some of metro Detroit’s finest commercial galleries and more.

During the fair, don’t miss the Ruby Red Invitational, a special exhibition of work by members of the Lakeside Palette Club, the Mount Clemens Art Association and the Warren Tri-County Fine Arts Association, on the theme of ruby red.

The invitational will be on exhibit June 6 through July 12, 2009 in the Community Gallery, with a closing reception Sunday, July 12, 1-3 pm. The exhibition is free and all are welcome.

For the first time ever, the Anton Art Center will host a Members Only exhibition. Members of the center are invited to submit an original work of art for display. Details will be shared in an upcoming issue of the Centerpiece, the center’s member newsletter.

“Collected” features work from Metro Detroit’s active art collectives, including Debt Collective, GOD Club, The IP Collaborative, Moving Walls, Slippery Weasel Society, Superior Belly and Tiny Circus.

An artist collective is an initiative that is the result of a group of artists working together, usually under their own management, towards shared aims. This is an exhibition for collectors and artists alike. Collected highlights the importance of artists working in free cooperation with one another to raise the profile of arts in Michigan. Each participating group demonstrates the diversity and strength of work being created in their area.

Duo, Chris Samuels and Ian Swanson make up the Detroit-based Debt Collective work on a collaborative large scale installation along with individual works. Also Detroit-based, GOD Club is a multidisciplinary creative output label and collective, which includes David S. Blunk, Jessica Blount, David Greer, Justin Marshall, Issac Royale and Janine Surma. Abbigail Israelsen and Julie Prokop will show a series of collaborative works based on exchanged writings.

Working with the Museum of New Art, Moving Walls artists Jef Borgeau, Kyohei Abe, Cyrus Karimipour, Marla Karimipour, Mary Fortuna, Kelly Frank, Corine Vermuelen-Smith, Vagner Whitehead and Alison Wong seek out relationships with other galleries to host exchange exhibitions.

Jeanne Bieri, Carl Butler, Jerome Feretti, Mary Fortuna, Matt Hanna, Andy Krieger and Arturo Rodriguez will install “Weasel Camp” a collaborative work under the Slippery Weasel Society.

A second multidisciplinary collective, Superior Belly, includes members Beverly Fresh, John Ikera, Zack Ostrowski, Jon Potts, Tom Pyrzewski, Dwane Raupp and Anthony Stewart.

Tiny Circus presents creative storytelling through stop-motion animations, collaboratively produced by Camille Bonham, Carlos Ferguson, Jessica Frelinghuysen, Grace Le Maitre, Amy Santoferraro, Greta Songe and Jason Reitz.

There will be live music from members of GOD Club and Superior Belly with a special performance by Beverly Fresh from 10 pm to 1 am, Friday, June 19, 2009. Admission is free, but attendees must be 18 or older with proper ID.

Learn innovative collage techniques and messages from Chesterfield Township artist Naomi Falk in an upcoming workshop at the Anton Art Center. Collage and Word Art will be held Saturday, April 4, 2009, from 11 am to 2 pm. The cost is only $25 for members of the art center, and $35 for non-members. All materials are provided.

Using the theme Censorship, Collage and Word Art students will experiment with combining both found and handmade images and texts from a variety of media sources. By obscuring or embellishing different parts, students will alter and adjust the meaning of their work, creating one-of-a-kind collages. Students are also welcome to bring in old letters or other personal materials to add to their collages.

Ms. Falk has had work exhibited in many exhibitions and galleries both regionally and nationally, including the Midland Center for the Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, in Pittsburgh, and the Brian Marki Gallery in Portland, OR. She teaches part-time at Macomb Community College and oversees the Art Gallery at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. Several of her works are on exhibit at the Anton Art Center through March 28, 2009, as part of Faces: Not Your Ordinary Portrait Show.

At the closing reception of Faces on Saturday, March 28, Ms. Falk will lead a workshop in silhouette making. The workshop, along with a talk by Faces artist Julie Russell Smith of Detroit, is free and open to the public. Reserve a space no later than March 21 by calling the Anton Art Center at 586-469-8666.

For more information or to register for Collage and Word Art, call the center at 586-469-8666 or visit www.theartcenter.org. The Anton Art Center is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm; Friday, 10 am to 6 pm; and Sunday, 12 noon to 4 pm. The center is closed on Mondays.
